Fun fact:
The reason why "lol" is just "w" in Japanese is due to the verb "笑う" (warau) or "to laugh". This got shortened to "w" much like other internet acronyms like "lol".
Because many w's side-by-side looks like a field of grass, "草" (grass) eventually became the new term for laughing online.
