John Wick 4 Ending Explained is here! John Wick has a shocking ending that we should have seen coming. We explain how this was foreshadowed by the entire series, and what is next for this universe following John Wick Chapter 4.

Edited by Lee Mazzio and Rohail Mistry

#JohnWick4 #EndingExplained

The final scene shows John whispering his wife's name as he collapses, followed by Winston standing over his grave.

It's hard to believe that someone so un-killable has finally bit the dust, especially since we have seen him on death's door so many times before. [clip] If you’re skeptical about whether or not the Baba Yaga is REALLY dead, well, we’ve got answers.

[clip]

Doug: Seems pretty obvious to me! We saw his tombstone and everything…. but wasn't John wick 5 already greenlight for production?

"Sometimes you need that creative breath to come up with fresh sh*t. Otherwise, I'm stressed out about making two movies instead of one really good one… I think it would be unfair to our fan base and unfair to the property, in general, to just stretch it out in the sake of efficiency or financial or creative efficiency. I'd rather do it, take a breather, get ou together, analyze our mistakes and see what worked and what didn't."

Doug: Well, that explains why they didn't film them back to back, but the rest is clear as mud! is he making another movie or not?

It is up to speculation at this point - BUT we do know that two series based on the franchise are being produced: The ballerina and the continental.

The Continental is a series is a TV series on Prime Video, [still] and The Ballerina is a film that takes place in the same universe between chapters 3 & 4.[still]

Similarly, The continental takes place in the mid-seventies and follows Winston's origins[clip] - but filming may become complicated with the recent passing of Lance Riddick (RIP)[clip]

Keanu confirmed that John does have at least a Cameo appearance in the Baleriana [clip], and it’s possible we could see a younger Wick in The Continental.[clip]

Both are scheduled to drop later this year, but neither will confirm whether or not John is alive or dead after Chapter 4

Doug: I thought you said you had answers?

I do! Personally, [clip “I'm positive he dead”] for a few reasons. His story has come full circle, the torch has been passed, and it fits the themes of the other films.

The story of John wick is one big game.

[clip]

The films gamify the world they exist in by providing strict rules that must be followed in order to play, [clip] and breaking said rules not only results in severe consequences but also severs you from future participation.[clip] Heck, the whole operation is coin-operated like some high-class assassin arcade! [clip]

In the first films, It seems like the underground assassins are the only ones playing while the real world exists behind them, [clip] but chapters 3 and 4 show just how big this game really is. [clip]

John’s abilities and gun skills give off major first-person shooter vibes, Hence this scene from the first film [clip]

These screenshots are from the game project legion, and sidenote, his in-game username is Neo, and the characters he’s fighting are named “badass” and “Point break” [still]

In chapter 4 - we see many “games” being played out. John’s poker game with Killa,[clip] The card game he plays to decide the rules of the duel, [clip]

And even the duel itself are all games we see played out on screen.

Another huge game reference is the fight scene shot from the top down, [clip]

This is a clear reference to the cult classic game Hotline mami - which also uses this top-down perspective and revolves around a lone badass taking down Russian mobsters.[clip]

Having these direct videogame references bookend the beginning and end of the series makes it seem as if John’s “game” has been fully played out.

John's not dead. The grave symbolizes the end of his assassin career. When him and Caine were dueling, they were shooting each other in non-lethal areas of the body. If you remember the doctor in the beginning of chapter 3, he makes John shoot him in the clavicle and close to his hip, just like where Caine shoots John.

This was by far the best John Wick film. The cinematography was absolutely stunning.

At the ending when you see John Wick's dog perk up and look into the distance. They set that up like JW could still be alive, but that he wanted to stay dead because now he's truly free. Even if you're free from the High Table there may be those out there still willing to put a bullet in your head. Vengeance is always lurking it's ugly little head. They gave a perfect example of that in the post-credits scene. So I thought that was a befitting ending. The man, the myth, the legend and he cemented all that in the end. Bravo.

I have a feeling that Mr. Nobody, Caine and Akira will have a big role if they decide to continue this "Wick-verse". Also, we need more Winston and Bowery King, they are amazing

I didn't know Lance Riddick passed away! He was always perfect for the typecast roles he was given. He killed it in Fringe.

The scene in JW4 when the radio station DJ is directing assassins to kill JW4 is a direct homage to the 1979 movie, THE WARRIORS. That movie is about a Street gang that finds itself on the wrong side of town and has to fight their way through other gang territories to get back home, all the while a DJ is narrating.

John never got his car back and Aurelio said it would be ready in 2030. So we got 7 years and I guarantee that we will see John riding in that car into the sunset in one more Wick film.

Just a thought but Winston saying “farewell my son” to me is a very literal father to son moment as the camera zooms in to his tattoo of the same family John was given to as a child. Winston was his dad and guardian angel from the start. Don’t know if many actually caught that. That’s how I interpreted anyhow.

If they decide to make a 5th film he's not dead. If they don't he's dead.

i dont think johns dead..i think when he asked winston to put loving husband on his tombstone he was asking to help fake his death ...we didnt see him get buried....if they do make another it will start with john sitting back up on the steps he "died" on

Ngl, the ending completely caught me off guard. Everything looked so positive and like things were going to be okay. I said from the beginning though, there is no happy ending for John. It only ends one way for a man like that, so it shouldn't be a surprise but it was.

Caine and Wick were both expertly deliberate people. They both purposely hit each other in exact intended spots. Caine did not want to gravely wound Wick nor Wick on Caine. At the cemetery, with Winston and Laurence Fishburne visiting “Beloved Wife/Husband, ” I forget the dialogue, but they say something and the camera then focuses for a moment on “Dog.” Dog reacts as though someone is nearby and just off frame. I think it’s Dog that gives away Wick is not in the grave.

Saw on the internet, likely the makers are hanging the chapter 5 fate on how chapter 4 performs and if Keanu wish2 continue. Personally I felt sad if this is how its going to end. I know kind feel like makers faked his death. If they want to go with chapter 5, they have a high table arch, a villain from any high table 12 member country. Personally to me it's mind-blowing because I just re- watched John wick 1 2 3 continuously before watching chapter 4. Believe me. The movie story, screenplay feels like it happened within 2 to 4days

I don't think he is really dead. During the funeral the dog sense something like the dog sensed John was still alive at the end of 3.

I think he’s alive still and the tomb stone represents this particular part of his life coming to an end. He has nothing left to fight for, the last thing Winston could grant him was a complete cut off and reset. Completely getting rid of “John wick” he’s gone and we are left with a shell of his former self. When asked “do you think he’s in heaven or hell?” Winston replies “who knows?” I feel like this means (at least in Winston’s mind) that John could either be living in peace not having to fight anymore (heaven) or alone in this world nothing left to fight for WAITING for death (hell) now that he has nothing to worry about

Mr nobody is easily one of my favorite side characters in this franchise ( and Caine of course)

Also the scene that has fire involved was mind blowing.

I really loved Akira, I really hope we get more of her in the John Wick Universe/Franchise

John's not dead its because of Caine's last words to John after the duel. He said "You owe me one!". The scene with Winston and Bowery King in the cemetery just shows that John is still alive with their dialogue and the dog looking away at something during that scene while they are talking about John. The cemetery scene showing John's tombstone just symbolizes his freedom from the assassins. The post credit scene sets up the next chapter with John, Caine and Akira. There will be a lot of ways the chapter 5 plot will go but i think the best way is that John will help Akira realize that revenge is not the answer to everything and Caine and his daughters life was at the hands of the Marquis that is why he did what he did, John will be protecting Caine and his daughter while trying to convince Akira to not kill them. :)
