I have found that the formal address also reduces the emotional involvement you have with somebody which can be very helpful in stressful or uncomfortable situations.
In addition I think that using "Sie" with someone you respect very much protects you from saying something inappropriate, make a witty comment stuff like that. It doesn't mean that you like the person less, but it keeps you at the right distance...while this is a balancing act, even for native Germans, it can be very helpful if you can master it ;)

Brits are definitely great at queuing. If you stop somewhere you might find people queuing behind you (based on a true story). Personal space? You clearly never needed to go by London Underground to work during rush hour. I remember, I missed three trains until I decided to squeeze in. I learned very quickly to stand in the smallest of spaces for 45 minutes, one hour including the obligatory "signal failure". I wondered why they never repaired that bloody signal - but I now know, of course, It's a very old underground. So all laws of British personal space are temporarily suspended there.

I now live in the US and miss clearly defined formal relationships. To me as a European, American work relationships are very exploitative and then you have to be best friends with the boss. I think it's a mind f.

Ich war Austauschschüler in Essex und es war eine wunderbare Zeit.Bin jetzt Rentner, habe hier gut und gerne gelebt.Der einzige Grund warum ich nicht zurück ins UK gegangen bin waren die hohen Preise für Häuser, die für mich lediglich Baracken waren.Ich fühlte mich im UK freier.Ansonsten Super Video. FYI ;) out of the net : In Early Modern English, thou was the singular and you was the plural. Plural you came to be used as a polite form of address (similar to the French vous, which is also used for the plural), but over time this polite form became more and more common, eventually displacing the singular thou altogether.

Personal space. There are some studies about that and it's usually around 50cm, not only Germany.
When you were explaining, I had the image of the Tokio metro, where people are pushed into it. Then you said exactly that. No, we do not want that here (or in the Tube in London).

Oh my, I could talk about this all day! As a German working in England, I have taught quite a few colleagues how to work efficiently and although I am bad at computers, using them efficiently. Filing and sharing info so that everyone knows what is going on is so important!

The formal addressing of people is first and foremost a sign of courtesy and respect, I think.
Not necessarily a sign of distancing. There is a saying in Austria: Please keep it formal, you are so sympathetic to me ! ( Bleiben wir bitte beim Sie, Sie sind mir so sympathisch!)
You can have a very confidential and fruitful "Sie-relationship" for years without appearing distanced to each other. In these cases the wish to show respect prevails over the wish of more closeness.
Switching from Sie to Du is also a formal act. You drink on it with crossed arms. (Brüderschaft trinken). Very uplifting, and also long lasting most of the times. Your relationship with the new friend is raised to a more confidential and emotional level, almost like a family-relation.
If you are prematurely "geduzt", you might perceive this as a lack of respect, also regarding your "true " friends, who entered the "club" after a more protracted process of knowing each other and in mutual agreement.
"Progressive" CEOs and even Hotel-Managers try to introduce addressing customers and collaborators with "Du"and the first name. Many Germans perceive this as inadequate and embarrassing. Rightly so.

Japanese will always first consider what‘s best for others. In a crowded train this means that personal space is very much reduced because people wish others not to have to wait for the next train and rather jump in the current one which is already fully packed. In situations where it‘s not crowded and where you interact personally, this means to grant the other person a lot of personal space, especially if it is a woman.

when you look back into the history of the english language, there was an informal _du_ (2. singular) and a formal _sie/ihr_ (2. plural) : thou and you. all that is left of this is the formal version ...
