What does vocal rest mean? How long should I be on vocal rest? How to rest vocal cords? What is vocal rest anyways? How to vocal rest? In this video, I am answering all these questions, plus I will share vocal rest tips for singers, speakers and other voice users.
First, I will talk about vocal rest definition because this concept is widely misunderstood. Not a long time ago voice rest was prescribed for any vocal issue. There are undeniable vocal rest benefits for sure, but it is not an answer to all vocal problems. Vocal rest exercise or pacing vocal use may be more appropriate options for many people. Absolute vocal rest meaning absolute silence is nowadays prescribed only for rare situations. Watch this video to learn more about vocal rest for singers and speakers and get practical voice rest tips.

Resting Your Voice Is The Single Most Important Factor In Healing Laryngitis
And Other Reasons For Losing Your Voice.
Irritation And Inflammation Need Time To Resolve,
Avoiding Using Your Voice Gives Your Vocal Cords The Chance To Recover.

Try Not To Talk For A Day Or So; If You Must Speak, Use Your Typical Volume.

This video was great Katarina, thanks.

For all the worried folks in the comments, that see no improvement in their condition. VOCAL THERAPY WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE!! My singing technique wasn't that bad, but oh boy my talking was terrible. I didn't realize how much breath pressure I was putting, always speaking with my chest and so loudly. My therapist helped me talk with a mixed voice and in a lower volume. Let me tell you, it will make your voice rest a lot more.

Sending healing vibes your way my friends!!

From my own experience with laryngitis I learnt that as long as there is inflammation, so pain and/or swelling absolute voice rest is really essential (for about 1 week straight), because it's very easy to strain the voice otherwise. As soon as the pain is gone completely voice exercises and using the voice silently, then building up from there has helped a lot. Greetings from a german speech and language therapist 😊

I’ve done tons of voice rest in my life. I had a vocal Injury years ago and my doctor had me on voice rest whenever I could. Long story short, the injury healed. I voice rest now whenever I push my voice too hard or drink too much in a loud bar. I’ve noticed every single time I voice rest, my voice is weak for days and sometimes a week later the problems come back. In order to get back to full vocal health, it’s nearly a month long process of re strengthening my voice after any period of voice rest for me. It’s great for days but if I sing too much or push my body too hard excercising during or shortly after this period, I go back to square one. Ever hear of anything like this?

Wish I had seen a video like this two years ago! When I was diagnosed with nodules, I went on a period of 1 week rest, then later 2 weeks and it was awful. Thank goodness for the text to speech apps! I think it made my muscles weak and me afraid to use them to hurt myself again and I developed MTD. It’s been a long road to recovery and I’m still working on it daily but it’s improving! Love your videos and thank you for sharing your knowledge 🙏🏻.

Imo with asthma, allergies and reflux, the best "cure" is ginger and talking or singing without adding too much volume or strain

So, stay in comfort zone and "chill" xD but that's just my personal experience

I can personally confirm the thing you said about being 1 month not using your voice, that leads to fear of using it.

Absolutely true. I went like 2 months with absolutely 0 vocal use.

I am scared to use it, I feel stuff I dont know if its in my head or not. I cant move past the lip trills to achieve a speaking voice. It really does hurt one's life to be silent for so long.

If anyone reads this I hope you read this if you were planning or are onto absolute voice rest for extended periods of time.

Hi Katrina. Your videos are pretty good ❤️👍. I do Singing. But right from this year. I have noticed that it takes a lot of pressure to sing. And on some notes only air comes out of mouth. I am really scared of this.

Hi Katarina, thank you for your videos and insight! I was told by the ENT that my right vocal cord is larger than the left, and it appears I am recovering from a hemorrhage. I have been in speech therapy for 2 months now. My mid range is coarse and my high range is breathy and lacks strength. The injury occurred Jan-Feb of this year. I am curious as to how long the recovery period can take from what you have seen in your experience. It makes me nervous because it is taking so long and sometimes I feel like I will never get my voice back. Thank you for your input! I just really want to have some hope that this will eventually resolve no matter how long it may take.

Hello Katarina thank you so much for this video 🙏. I work at a job where I do yell a decent amount due to distance and noise. What can I do before and after to keep my voice in shape? Would straw breathing or other semiocluded techniques help?

I overproject my voice (it doesn't hurt and I know, when to stop). But the main problem is I OVERUSE my voice (uppercase here is necessary). Past some days I feel my screams got worse, so I decided to not screams for a time and be silent

Hi there, 18 year old guy here. i think i've had vocal nodules for about 2 years and haven't really tried anything to fix it cause i didn't know. I can't even go to the doctor at the moment for various reasons so im trying to heal my voice on my own. If i speak for like more than 5 minutes my voice immediately dries up and i can't speak at all and it proceeds with a lot of pain afterwards. At one point it was so bad that when i spoke, my voice felt like something pointed and rough was scratching my throat. So i've been doing absolute vocal rest drinking lots of room temperature water (moderately) and drinking ginger tea. I've been trying to also get my sleep schedule in order as well which may have contributed to the issue as well. I don't really know what to do, i've had "VERY" bad technique when singing my whole life which caused the problem in the first place and i can't sing at all, now i can't even speak. It's really depressing but i'm trying.

Hello Katrina, I saw you on YouTube and was hoping you could shed light on my situation. 6 weeks back March 20th 2022 I got a soar throat and went to the hospital to checked. No COVID, no strep but red in the throat area. Voice at this time was normal, and I could even sing. 5 days later on the 25th as I was speaking at my job my voice literally dropped in pitch 3 octaves lower but very clear kinda like Barry White but I’m normally a tenor. I kept talking because my shift wasn’t over yet. I continued to speak for 4 hours like this until I went home and went to sleep. I woke up the next day March 26th 2022 to a whisper for a voice! I went to the ENT and he scoped me finding my falsetto vocal chords not moving when I sing. He says they won’t relax… My question is, am I damaged for good? Is there something I could do? Will my voice fully recover? Note… the ENT says I don’t have any nodules and no other problems he can see with the scope.

HI! I've been struggling with a pesky vocal nodule for months now. I had been dealing with losing my voice easily since I lost it once over summer. I would rest it until it felt better, then as soon as I started talking again, my voice would start hurting quickly. I never noticed much difference in the sound of my speaking voice, just the feeling of my throat. My nodules got diagnosed in October, and the doctor prescribed me vocal rest and a low acid diet. Long story short, the low acid diet backfired but I rested my voice for a full week and a half and my issues persisted. I steam almost every day now, I have a humidifier in my room, I drink loads of water, I try to save my voice when I can. What am I missing?

Thanks for your valuable information. Actually I took a surgery of my right vocal cord polyps from a reputed hospital in before just 20 days. I feel better and no any problem in my throat in eating or swallowing. But my Voice is no clear and loud as my before voice.. People can understand that I have any problem in my vocal. I am not taking any medicines now. I am an office clerk, so I don't use my voice much. Please guide and suggest me.

Hello 👋 i'm self taught singer but about 8 months ago i was diagnosed with vocal nodules but even after medication my voice seems so badly fatigued that i don't know what to do anymore. Will voice rest help with vocal fatigue?
