You mentioned "vocal edema", which is correct, but a lot of vocal docs and the rest of the medical world (ENT docs, all that) would call this "laryngitis", which is also correct. It is a medical term for inflammation of the larnyx, which can include---of course--your vocal cords inside it.

And as you know, wherever there is inflammation anywhere in the body, the symptoms are usually either stiffness, or, as you say, "edema" or "swelling"--or even both.

I've been having this problem of my throat feeling swolen on and off for a while, but I didn't even go through my mind that it could be damage :(
I can't sing anymore without my throat swelling, and so I haven't been singing, but now I'm worried it could be permanent. I keep making whistling noises, I can't do high pitched notes or noises anymore, and I don't sound as good. I don't know when this started, but I'm only 15, so I don't want to ruin my voice so early in life! :(

Just for the record, a good friend pointed out that I mispronounced the medical term, edema. It is pronounced ehdeemah, with the accent on the second syllable. I won't make that mistake again and hopefully you won't as well.  Thanks Nancy! :)
