Sometimes in the field you gotta use what's at hand

I had a three-quarter inch splinter under my thumb nail. I cut back my nail with nail clippers then proceeded to pull the splinter out with a rusty needle nose pliers. The worse part was cutting back the thumb nail. I cut the nail back almost half way down the nail just to expose the splinter. That hurt the most.

As a carpenter I’ve removed splinters using my Stanley knife and long nosed pliers.

When you are working in brutal conditions you use brutal tools.

I had one about that long drive it's way through my big toe, hit the underside of the nail, and break off. I didn't know about the remaining portion for two months, until it opened up and ejected itself. And yes, I did use pliers to remove the first portion, and it took A LOT of force to remove.

Just a heads up DOC, the pliers are only a problem if they are going into the wound, keep practicing doc.

You don’t catch tetanus from rust. You catch it from exposure to Clostridium tetani bacteria via soil or on other objects, which may or may not be pliers. I am a vet 😊

I got a hair splinter once.
I was at a camp in the bathroom when I noticed a thick, black hair shoved into my wrist. I pulled on it. It immediately hurt like hell. I asked my mom for help pulling it out. It took a couple tries but I got it out. I saw a moth afterwards :D (I was 8 at the time and loved moths)

you take a butane torch and submit a 30 sec heat treatment to the tip of the pliers . After that as clean as every tool a surgeon would have in his toolbox. When I was a child my mother opened pus-bags with a needle she passed over a lighter.

The existence of rust on a tool does not make it contaminated with bacteria.

Oh my husband would. He would use a needle to make a hole in his nail for blood blisters .

So the pliers are the problem. Good to know!

I had a pine splinter all the way under my thumb nail. Every time I tried to get it out, it broke. I had to let the nail grow out.
