Gordon Lightfoot, a Canadian folk music superstar known for songs like "Sundown" and "If You Could Read My Mind," passed away on Monday night at the age of 84, his publicist confirmed.

Lightfoot postponed or cancelled many upcoming performances in April, citing undisclosed health problems.

Over 500 of his compositions have been recorded by artists as diverse as Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Barbra Streisand, Eric Clapton, Olivia Newton-John, and Jerry Lee Lewis.

Lightfoot is widely regarded in his native Canada as one of the musicians who best captured the spirit of the country in his music.

Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada, tweeted after hearing of his death that the country "has lost one of our greatest singer-songwriters."

Gordon Lightfoot's music is evocative of Canada; he had a significant impact on the country's musical landscape. Trudeau wished for his eternal legacy and for his music to continue to influence new generations.

After establishing himself as a songwriter in the United States and the United Kingdom, Lightfoot published his debut album, "Lightfoot!" in 1966.

Songs like "For Lovin' Me" and "Early Mornin' Rain," which were covered by the likes of Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan, can be found on the album that brought him fame in both Canada and the United States.

A close friend of Dylan's for nearly 60 years, Lightfoot inspired the legendary songwriter to muse, "Every time I hear a song of his, it's like I wish it would last forever."

Lightfoot released a string of albums with wildly varying subject matter after his debut, including "Don Quixote" (1972) and toured across Canada, the United States, and Australia.

Lightfoot's album "Salute" (1983) came about after he sobered up after years of heavy drinking.

"Beginnings" was his final album, released in 2021. EFE

I think this is sad the way you mislead people in thinking he had a message for people, just because Gordon Lightfoot meant so much for so many. Why use a man's death that way? Just seems wrong to me...

This is a reasonable tribute, but it sucks that you would use the death of a wonderful human being to trick people into watching your video. There was absolutely nothing in this that Gordon Lightfoot said before his death and it's not touching at all. If you're a person reading this comment before the end of the video, don't bother watching any more, it just says things that are freely available if you look online and nothing beyond that.

Misleading title for video. I do not appreciate my time being wasted and yeah….. AI for sure . Pronounciation gives it away.

May Gordon Lightfoot Rest in Peace. He wrote beautiful 🎶 music and lyrics to his songs. He had a great voice that inspired you to listen to his songs. He definitely will be missed. Side note: learn how to pronounce Don Quixote.
