Quake: Storggification is a living nightmare and the worst possible fate
Mechanicus: From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me!

Fun fact, like the Strogg, the French are also controlled by a horrific creature known as the macron.

8:49 I like how Kane is struggling as much as he can through the process but once he sees the finished product he just sorta checks himself out like "Okay, maybe it wasn't *that* bad" right before seeing a big ass needle and going "waitwaitwaitwaitwait!"

The stroggification of our character in Quake 4 was the most brutal POV scene I've seen in a game, even looking at it today after all these years, and after games have reach a greater level of realism, I'm still taken aback by how brutal this scene is. That said, I wish they made another narrative driven Quake game, when it comes to plot it has as much potential if not more than the Doom universe, yet they've barely touched it in 19 years, that makes absolutely no sense.

My best guess on these guys is that they were originally created to be used as super-soldiers before eventually turning on their masters.

Quake horror is quite underrated in my opinion. This is just one of the worst fate imaginable !

Interesting note about the Strogg: their ingame AI is probably pretty close to how they would actually act. It's no longer a creature with thoughts and feelings, but rather a machine programmed for a task and ordered by an RTS commander. iirc they aren't actually a hivemind because the individual units don't think at all, it's just lines of code

I always understood that, the nexus overtakes only the body.
But the person inside is still concious and indipendant.
A helpless observer and passanger in their own body.

The Adeptus Mechanicus be taking notes like, "Huh. Why didn't we think of a standardized, conveyor belt system for our servitors? Further, let's get one of those Stroyant critters, it seems way more efficient than corpse starch."

I just finished replaying Quake 4 after a loooong time, and the Stroggification section was still every bit as gut-wrenching as it was the first time I played the game back when it came out. Truly marvelous.

There's also the Firemen from Bioshock Infinite. Sinners locked inside a metal suit, their bodies constantly on fire, while being force-fed Plasmids that heal constantly, but do nothing to stop the constant suffering from the fire. They have no free will, cannot commit suicide, and act as guards for the floating city of Columbia. Their only hope is to be defeated in battle, at which point they explode in a huge fireball, ending their suffering. They are suicidal combatants, stopping only when the enemy is dead, or they are defeated. They are terrifying opponents.

Having the same name as the protagonist (Kane) really helped make me like this game. Idk it's a totally different experience to the normal silent protagonist trope because it's not just me putting myself in the role, it's like actually being there with all the marines calling out your name as they get picked off and brutilized... really adds to the horror.

As I used to be kid, I didn’t get a chance to learn the fate of captured marines, but I’m feeling heartbroken for them and everything they had gone through. They didn’t deserve this, which is why I always put them out of their misery.

Thank you for researching and sharing this history for all of us, Quake fans! 💛

Damn, at least the Mechanicus would lobotimze you being turning you into a servitor. Never played the Quake games so I'm very interested to learn more about the universe!

The opening cinematic for Quake 2 is one of my favorites in video game history. And the stroggification scene in Q4 is obviously one of the most memorable sequences in FPS games.

Missed an opportunity to talk about the waste processing facility, but I guess I'll fill in the blanks;

"Nothing would go to waste, however even then there's a twisted nuance to 'waste' when it comes to the strogg proccessing bodies for their war efforts...
In the rare case, If extremely unlucky, (horrible as it was to forcefully be converted into a strogg unit) a convert could end up as faulty or rejected,
and a fate worse than death would befall them.
By the higher powers that be under the strogg scientists, not quite knowing what to do with their failed yet animate soldier experiments,
such rejects would be condemned to a state of existence as barely alive organic husks bolted together onto shoddy metal frames that easily could fall apart,
doomed to roam the rotting slums of the biowastes within the waste processing facility complex, one might say 'zombies', and that wouldn't be far off the truth,
but they are still more or less alive, and quite hostile regardless of their impaired capabilities.
The most forsaken among such failed transfers roaming this putrid place would be known as the 'slimy transfer'.
A true nightmare fate, discarding the host of all higher thinking capabilities, turning him in a mindless zombie creature with rotting flesh held together by corroded mechanical bodyparts,
voraciously craving the fleshy remains of corpses strewn about in the waste complex, and a vile ability to retaliate against intruders by projectile vomiting highly corrosive acid towards them.
How the failed transfers exactly ended up in this godforsaken place is still not entirely known, but I can only imagine what hell one must suffer to exist like this..."

I do enjoy the Strogg aspect of Quake; I think the idea of a race that depend on harvesting organic life as their method of reproduction to be a disturbing and fascinating concept. And the Stroggification process being like a slaughterhouse ghost house ride, and an extended game over sequence is a memorable sight. I also like the less humanoid Strogg enemy types (like the Stream Protectors), and wish we could see more of that; indicating they've harvested several races, which could provide some interesting lore if they expanded on it, more.

Good video. Would also like to see more Quake/Strogg focused vids.

Such fond memories of my mom buying Quake II for me when I was a kid. Would have been 9 or 10 when I got it and it was one of the first games I really remember going through and trying to find all the secrets and stuff.
