The changes in the Soviet bloc in the late 1980s and early 1990s posed major challenges for U.S. policymakers. Dr. Thomas W. Simons, Jr., who was a senior U.S. State Department official at the time dealing with policy toward Eastern Europe and the USSR (and who became U.S. ambassador to Poland in 1990), recently completed a memoir on his career. He will be offering his assessment of the way the United States responded to the momentous changes in the region, in conversation with Prof. Nadia Boyadjieva.
