So many people seem to think that Sun Wukong 72 transformation mean there are 72 forms he can turn into, but it is actually 72 kind of skill/spell:

Debunked: (I never read English translated JTTW myself, so I mainly quote from the original Chinese language book. And I believe the original Chinese version is more believable than translated version)

Sun Wukong lifts Mount Sumeru, Mount Emei and Mount Tai. Mount Sumeru is the axis of theuniverse.

First, we need to know that JTTW is a novel, not the actual myths where it get inspiration from (I call JTTW a parody because it satirizes both Buddhism and Daoism, but seems like ppl here disagree). JTTW to the actual Buddhism and Daoism myths, is like Norse gods in Marvel to the actual Norse myths.

JTTW mixes Buddhism, Daoism and Chinese traditional myths. So confusing settings in their own cosmologies will only bring big inconsistency and makes no sense.



In JTTW, the three mountains are controlled and moved by little earth gods(Tudi Gong, "土地公"), which are almost lowliest deities in Chinese traditional myths. Even in JTTW world, they are weak and bullied by lots of demons. What power have they shown? Guarding and blessing a small piece of land just like what they do in the actual Chinese traditional myths. The Tudi moving the three mountains lacked of knowledge so bad that they didn't even recognize Wukong from the start until someone else told them.

If the three mountains are really like how they are in the actual Buddhism and Daoism cosmologies, how would some lowly, weak Tudigong from Chinese traditional myths be able to control and move them? A little earth god who guards and blesses small land have the might to move "the axis of the universe"? This simply makes no sense.

There is a popular theory among Chinese readers, that the three mountains are more of abstract symbols rather than real weights. Mount Sumeru being the centre of Buddhist world means it symbolizes the Buddhism rather than be the actual one in Buddhist world. Mount Emei is a sacred mountains of Daoism, so it symbolizes Daosim. Mount Tai was usually used as sacrifice place for Chinese emperors, so it symbolizes imperial power. Buddhism and Daosim didn't give Wukong too much trouble. But when imperial power came in, Wukong can't withstand the weight. But this theory is basically just telling us "physical weight doesn't matter", no powerscaling from this feat now.

So Wukong's mountain lifting feat is best considered as lifting normal mountains IRL (the three mountains exist IRL). Impressive of course, Wukong is pretty strong, but not "centre of the world or universe" level.

Additional, Wukong can't lift Guanyin's water vase, which contains "water of an ocean".



2. Sun Wukong has seven different immortalities. He erases his name and all the monkeys' namesfrom the Book of Life and Death. So he cannot be killed.

Yes, Su Wukong has strong level immortality. It's true that almost nothing can kill Sun Wukong in JTTW. But, there still is: Flask of Yin and Yang Essence(阴阳二气瓶).

When Wukong fought Golden Winged Great Peng(金翅大鹏雕), the demon tried to use the flask to kill Wukong. And it almost did. Its fire can hurt Wukong's body and prevent Wukong's escape on his own. This time even Wukong himself thought "he was done for" until he used the life-saving hairs given by Guanyin to break the flask and escape.



Even Wukong was terrified and cried this time.

正此凄怆，忽想起菩萨当年在蛇盘山曾赐我三根救命毫毛， ...



Wukong had to use the three life-saving hairs given by Guanyin, making a drill to break a hole on the flask.

So, yes, even though it's difficult, Wukong can be killed.

As for Wukong erasing his name on the Book of Life and Death(生死簿), we can learn it doesn't do much from the later story of the book.

When Wukong returned Mount Huaguo after he was dismissed by Tang Sanzang first time, his monkey subordinates told him, after he was gone, Mount Huaguo was violated by human hunters. Lots of monkeys were killed and captured. Wukong used to erase the names of all monkeys on Book of Life and Death, but it apparently didn't make monkeys immortal. (Feel free to copy and paste if u need to win an argument about monke)
