Easy DIY Concrete Mold Ideas

If you want to start making concrete castings at home there are a ton of great options to get you started. You can buy kits of mold making rubber from Smooth-On and these are fantastic but very expensive.

Urethane is probably the most common one used for concrete castings because of how durable it is. If you only want to make a small amount of casting rubber, you can mix silicone with corn starch (a few tablespoons per tube of silicone should do).

Plastic bowls are the next item that you should have for doing the easiest DIY concrete castings at home; ideally you find sets of large bowls and small bowls.

Latex can be used for smaller or fine detailed concrete casting pieces but the inability to build thickness with latex makes it less desirable than silicone or urethane based mold making rubbers.

It is my first time watching your videos. The Free Poop sign on the wall behind you really convinced me that your videos are totally worth my time.

Thank you! I’ve been interested in getting into concrete. It seems like a very accessible hobby. I strongly desire to make benches for us, family and friends for their patios.

Can you give an example of what an urethane resin product for this looks like? Is there any low-cost DIY options to use instead of specialty stuff for casting?

Thank you for posting this. I started working with concrete as a hobby 2yrs ago. Great information. Can you do a video on how to use shredded soaked/wet paper and concrete?

What type of silicone does the corn starch trick work with? I think acid-curing (vinegar smell) is used a lot in the US, but where I live almost everything is neutral-cure. Dos it work the same with both?

i make molds from either combining empty packages of food or actually anything, combining it with air-dry clay for negative space; or from creating them from craft cardboard sheets that i then cover with tape or smear a 3x coating for water resistance in the first few hours.
To tell you the truth, the concrete pouring is the more mundane part. making the molds is where i really get creative. Each piece is one-of-a-kind. adds to the excitement.

Maybe this is a silly question, but what's the "right" ratio between the 100% silicone & the corn starch?

Bro, the fact you have such few subs is a travesty!! I have about 55 btw. 😂 I’ve long thought about creating concrete casts of myriad things, including my own horrible sculptures. I am here now trying to learn. You present this material in a very easy to follow conversational style (I’m going to try and steal). Thank you sir. Oh, and when I upload my own creations, I shall happily reference you and your channel as my inspiration, repeatedly. ✊🏼

What about the pink foam boards sold at home improvement stores? They seem good for simply geometric shapes.

This is exactly what I needed to start my project. I have a design I made for the entrance to my garden, but how do I do it? Next step concrete. Thank you!

If I wanted to make a big mold for say a table would this still be a viable method?

I like your approach and delivery! How would you go about making a mold to cast full sized logs, 6 to 8 feet long? I have real logs to cast from. Thanks!
