Does This Landscaping Hack Work? DIY Faux Stone Edging

I'm making fake stones and rocks for my backyard landscape edging using concrete and plastic bags. For a fraction of the cost of real river rock stones you can create your own DIY stones using fast set cement. This is crazy fast and dirt cheap! These stones really give our garden the English cottage look Kim wanted. I saw this landscaping hack online and had to give it a try. I hope you enjoyed this DIY project.

Do you ever get sick of people asking you about this River they keep going to all the time to get stones? It looks like you get at least a comment today about it. It must be nice to live near a river all the time, but like most people don't

"I ask myself what would a socially conscious shoe company do then I make the women and children do it". That burn on Nike alone was worth the like.

Putting the stones in place when they are still wet and letting them cure in place would have allowed them to conform to each other tightly enough to reduce weeding and erosion.

I make my rocks with cement and sand. I used to bag them to set, but now I just make a firmer mixture than yours and I mold and leave to dry. Use another ( smaller) cement stone to sand it quickly. Turns out lovely. I paint some of mine with flowers and such (acrylic paint) then varnish the ones I decorate. I make many things in the garden and plan to have my own channel soon.

I love this! And I love the way you always incorporate your whole family in these projects. They seem to enjoy it, too. One day, they'll appreciate it even more.

My tip is to save up your grocery store plastic bags and use those maybe? Liked this video. Thanks.👍

You totally crack me up, and this seems like a fun project that turned out looking great! I just might have some concrete rocks to create in the near future, but instead of buying drop cloths, I'll use the plastic shopping bags that nearly every store sends your purchases home in. Besides, the plastic grocery bags are heavier than the drop-cloth plastic.

Let them cure over a concave surface, such as a bowl, and you can get larger pieces with less material. Noted by some is storing plastic inside to boost the size as well. Either way makes the "rocks" larger and a more efficient process. Plus they are lighter and easier to rearrange. Any rocks with a pocket under them are great for hiding things as well.

You know those blasted foam containers you get from the grocery store that have meat or fish in them? I recycle them by covering them over with cement and using them as "fake rock" in my "Zen" garden. I stack the finished rock up and plant evergreen groundcover in pockets and let the groundcover cover them so it looks "natural". Keeps those foam containers out of the landfill and the fake rock is lighter than real and a heck of a lot cheaper! :)

Very good. But some tips - if you live in an area with cold, frosty, icy winters, I suggest you add some of the fibre strands that reinforces concrete to help prevent cracking, and secondly I would recommend you seal the concrete using a sealant. I have used Thompsons Water Seal here in the UK, but there are many different brands. That will also help them not to crack due to winter weather (the water ingresses into the concrete and when it freezes, it expands and creates cracks). Also, the sealant I used leaves a satin type finish (some sealants can leave a glossy type finish) which helps to make it look more like stone.
