I use a Pick with Sand grip and that helped a lot. It was way more comfortable then the normal nylon picks

Its funny how I could breeze through creeping death and master of puppets downpicking only when I started then I got used to alternate picking and I just can't keep up lol

Not using a pick doesn't make you sound like a beginner. I chose to play with fingers after years of using a pick and so did a lot of great guitarists (Jack White for example)

A trick I used when I taught my niece how to play with a pick was to use a little strip of roll on white out on both sides of the pick, helps with grip. It’s more of a bandaid solution but it helps bridge that step.
