Today we add some tiny baby fish to the forest aquarium! These little fish are going to be so fun to watch grow up in this tank! MORE INFO ▼

Aquarium Co-Op

These baby fish were saved from a tank with super high nitrates. This meant that acclimation to their new aquarium needed to go smoothly. I decided to very slowly over the course of 2 days, drip acclimate as to halve the concentration of nitrate about 3 times. With levels of nitrate now much lower, I felt it was safe to add the bay fish to their new tank. Acclimation successful!

Hahaha! The same thing happened to me several years ago! I upgraded from 10 gallon to a 20 long, moved my zebra danios in there, then left the 10 with about 2-3 inches of water and no gravel, some filth on the bottom, and old filter and heater off. A few weeks later, I finally was like, "I guess it's time to finally clean this out, " peered in, and saw little things moving around, about the size of an eyelash. Thought it was bugs then realized they were actually swimming. Had to run out and get fry food. Shortly after that, the Inca snail population magically revived in that tank too, since there was then food available. I don't remember if I left one or two in there or if I thought the tank was completely empty. They lived for a couple years with just water top-off, a possibly broken heater, no gravel or decor, no filtration, and no cleaning save for the snails. I did pull out an ancient air pump and airline and, having no air stone but needed to mellow out the air force/flow... Stuck a random Nerf "bullet" to the tank bottom, then put the air tube inside it. It worked surprisingly well. I just didn't like the lack of water and surface movement but needed something really gentle for the little guys. Not sure where the eggs were. Tank completely empty except for the heater and internal filter, both off. So maybe on one of those? No clue!
Moral of these stories: sometimes laziness is life-saving/giving!

I love this scape. Good thing you left those plants and all that mulm. It is amazing how fry will survive with no predators and natural gunk to munch on.

That's awesome! The fact that they survived off the mulm is amazing. Awesome tank, Mike.

I always enjoy adding fry to a new established tank, it's
cool watching them grown into it.
