man just seeing the frontline not changing at all with numbers collapsing rapidly is honestly terrifying

One of the major flaws with these kind of videos are that these number of soldiers are straight copied from Wikipedia. These 1 million German and 2.5 million British Empire-French troops are the total number of men who served during the battle. Not the momentary as there was nowhere near enough supplies for this many soldiers in such a small area.
In the beginning, Germans had 10 divisions and a few brigades around the area while British(including Commonwealth) and French had deployed 24 divisions for the attack.

Remember the numbers were actual human lives with family, friends, lovers, dreams and memories.

The Battle of the Somme's main objective is to ease the pressure on Verdun. Instead of being the sideshow, it became the mainshow due to the casualties inflicted on both sides.

Honestly, I would rather fight in ww2 twice than fight in ww1 once.

The German has multiple defensive lines and each of those defensive lines had three trenches. These were the frontline trench, the support trench, and the reserve trench, each connected with communication trenches. German trenches were often made with concrete and had concrete pillboxes positioned to give them interlocking fire. These trench systems were almost always on the high ground, had impenetrable barbed wire, and were anchored along towns and villages creating strongpoints

No APCs in those days so a frontal assault over open ground is the only way to advance. Heavy casualties are almost always guaranteed.

😔I am German, my boyfriend is English.. our ancestors died on the western front fighting each other! Somme is a byword for disaster in the UK.. the battle devastated a whole generation, that could not be replaced. The British are indeed obsessed with this battle one because of the poems, songs and losses endured 1916. I hear my father in law say "its like the Somme all over again" when they are outside in the rain and muddy

To think that their sons would learn nothing and tripled the slaughter only 24 years later

understand that less than 1 second into the video, some 57 thousand men had fallen, 19 thousand of them never leaving those mud filled holes again

The Somme is often considered a British vs German battle while the French were fighting at Verdun, but one million French soldiers fought at the Somme, and 200, 000 became casualties. It certainly has to do with the first day of the Somme where the British lost 57, 000 killed or wounded, making it the deadliest day in British military History with 19, 240 killed. That day was a complete success for the French however, who took all their objectives, losing 1, 600 men and inflicting close to 10, 000 losses.

The Battle of the Somme was a rare historical conflict where both sides claimed a terrible defeat.

So many young men, lost for a useless war. Some of the men were as young as fourteen years old, because they lied and said they were seventeen in order to join. One of the youngest kids were only twelve years old and he joined after a girl gave him a white feather, which was something women gave to men as a symbol of cowardice for not fighting. May their souls rest easy.

The sheer scale of the Battle of the Somme is both staggering and heartbreaking. Let us remember the courage and sacrifice of those who endured unimaginable hardship.

It's tragic to see those numbers ticking away and think they are sons, brothers father's, from whichever side

Every mile in the somme is soaked in blood to this day

This is the perfect example of how slow Trench warfare actually is. The Entente outnumbers Germany with Over 1 Million soldiers and germany is still able to hold the line due to their entrenchment. In WW2 where trench warfare was not present anymore, the germans would have been pushed out of the Somme in less than 2 weeks.
