Throughout the Second World War, there were many wives of high ranking Nazi officials who were seemingly oblivious to the destructive and brutal actions of their husbands. Heinrich Himmler was the most senior member of the SS, but his wife Margarete would claim at the end of the war that she had no idea what her husband was doing. Himmler was running the SS who would guard the concentration camps, and his actions led to the slaughter of millions of people across Europe.

Margarete Himmler herself worked as a high ranking nurse inside of German military hospitals, but she would remain loyal to her husband despite the fact he had a mistress and an affair. However many have questioned whether Margarete Himmler actually knew about the destructive work her husband was doing, and he would even take his daughter to Dachau Concentration Camp.

My ex-mother-in-law was German and grew up in Nazi Germany. She said they all knew about the camps as there was a saying "watch what you say or you go up the chimney."

There is one very good reason for her to overlook his affair - if Adolf died suddenly HH would be a very possible contender to take over, in fact if a Hitler assassination had worked HH would have the perfect excuse to arrest anyone he'd like, especially his rivals for leader. That would make her "First Lady", a very generous reward for turning a blind eye.

All I know is his daughter Gudrun defended Himmler to her last breath. She remained a Nazi Princess, often attending SS reunions, funerals and group functions. I don’t know if Himmlers wife knew anything or not. In those days, in a male dominated society like the Nazi’s, the wife might know the husband’s job title and a little about what he did and how high he was. But few men anywhere talked about their work at home. Also, the camps were nominally under Himmler. Heydrich was the main planner along with Eichman. Himmler didn’t have much to do with them once they were built and running. The SS Security and Special Police were where his interest lie. I’m NOT defending Himmler. I think he was even more evil than Hitler!

For as long back as I can remember i get fits of jealous rage everytime i see a photo of Himmler. I cant help but compare his matinee idol good looks and rugged, alpha male physique to my own inferior charms, and over time I have become somewhat embittered at the fact that the gods did not chose to bless me with a chinless jawline and striking pot belly. I was therefore astonished to hear in your video that he was rather unlucky in love and breathed a sigh of relief that it all worked out in the end. I'd imagine I share the same dream as the over whelming majority of red blooded males of my generation to marry a committed nazi with the beautful features of a male prize fighter.
