The director of this film, Francis Ford Coppola, studied arts... his father tried to pressure him to study engineering, so perhaps this scene hits a bit close to home for the director.

They removed this scene from the final cut because it showed Michael too warmly. I love this scene, shows you that it wasn’t all bad with him and his family. He wasn’t the cold hearted bastard his sister made him out to be lol.

when he smiled after he asked "how do you plan to support her after studying fine arts?" realest worries of a father/uncle but asked in the most cautious way. so much in how he asked that question and everything that came after that.
