Hurricane Helene: Residents confronting scale of devastation which could run as high as $100 billion

From Florida to Virginia, millions in the American southeast are confronting the scale of their losses. They’ve seen hurricanes before, but none like Helene.

“This is the cost of living on Florida’s beaches… This is the devastation you go through living in a coastal town,” says Horseshoe Beach, Fla, resident Niki Keen while fighting back tears.

Authorities said they were still in active search and rescue mode in many states, often without phone service, Internet access or any other kinds of communication.

Insurance companies will draw out their payout for as long as they can as usual, while looking for ways to deny claims on technicality. These sleazy companies should be legally forced to address each claims in a timely manner.

Getting home insurance after rebuilding there will be next to impossible. Even if so, the cost of the insurance premiums will be so high as to be financially unsustainable for most people. There needs to be a seismic shift in how homes are constructed in Florida, and it won't be cheap.

Why don't they go back to the basics for communication? CB radios? The islands in the Bahamas used them before cell service. We need to be smarter about communication in events like this!

How it generally works is someone with the $50, 000 house wants to get $$1 million in insurance claims and people that had one shingle blown off their house one in entire new roof.
