If you want to include smaller/medium sized dogs, I've read that Aridales are very Protective. Although I've always wondered if a 60 pound dog really had the muscle to back it if a determed strong guy broke in on you. If memory serves the AKC standard calls for Airedales to top out at 60 or 65 pounds. As for the GSD and others on this list, I can definitely seeing most of them having the needed size to back any bluff if need me. I'm not sure about the Shar Pi but anything from a GSD or Doberman on up should be able to do the job. Of course you also need to take age and maturity/confidence of the dog into account. I know a guy who had 2 GSD.s when his home got broken into. He was at work and according to his wife when their adult son went out to fight the guy (health problems and all) the 2 dogs got confused. They seem to think the dogs showed the right instincts but got confused cause they were still to young. I guess they were the dog equivalent to teenagers. Oh and when the cops showed up the intruder was so drugged up they said it took 2 cops to subdue him. And just in case anybody is wondering his wife said she is thankful she didn't have to use her new glock.
