In case anyone was wondering how that works. Its about area of applied force and material hardness. Even though the ceramic hardly weighs anything, it applies all its force in a minute pin point of area on the glass, and since the ceramic is harder than the glass, the glass yields before the ceramic and presto, shattered glass!

Always fun to see a new generation of gearheads find out this is actually a thing. I remember how surprised I was to find out it actually works back in the day. It's especially memorable for me because I saw it for the first time when one of my co-workers was so convinced it wouldn't work he did it to his own window... Talk about hilarious. Still makes me laugh well over a decade later.

I was shown this in firefighter rookie school. My instructor hit the glass with a metal pipe and it bounced back, then tossed that little guy at it. crazy how stuff works sometimes.

Here in San Francisco it's very common to have bums rip the spark plugs out of motorcycles parked on the street so they can break into cars. They call the ceramic shards ninja rocks. It's common knowledge if you have a bike without fairings covering the motor, you simply must carry keep spare spark plugs handy. Keep them in your jacket pocket, your saddlebags, your desk at work, basically keep spares stashed anywhere you park your bike a lot.

The problem is so common, apparently a broken spark plug can legally be considered a burglary tool. Carrying one around in your pocket at 2am is not advised.

Also they can be used to smoke crack through.
