Where it can be asking, what is the mountain that was the known tallest before Everest.

If it helps, I too fell for that saying K2 before the answer.
I don't like those trick questions and we have no way to know for certain if there was a mountain taller than Mount Everest before we started cataloging the peaks of the earth.
The Hawaii islands for instance could have been the taller mountains above sea level at some point, if we take into consideration sea level changes during the ice ages, erosion and the tectonic processes.

Actually if you're talkin from the base to the tip Mt Mauna Kea in Hawaii is 14000 ft taller than Mount Everest

Mount Everest is not the world's tallest mountain, it is the world's highest mountain. There are much taller mountains than Everest in the Pacific ocean. Whoever wrote that question needs to re-word it.

Actually there was a time when the Rockie mountain was tallest...they are eroding and Everest will keep growing until the country of India no longer exists
