I am a GenX'er Southern African-American woman married to a Ghanaian man. Once he was teaching me how to prepare Jollof Rice, I told him that's our RED RICE that I grew up eating! I am sure my African ancestors brought this dish with them, but if you are Black & from the South or have Southern roots you've eaten Red Rice!

My mom made an Amercanized version of this when we were kids. My roots are in Ghana and we do our best to keep the connection.

This rice dish came to Louisiana during slavery….. the creole people there and others turned it to Jambalaya……. They added shrimp and sausages……..You really can’t mess up this rice unless you don’t know how to cook ….
In NOLA we also have Dirty Rice n its variations……✌🏽♥️😇

Jallof rice is a gift from God, and I appreciate Nigerians and every other country/culture in Africa that has brought it to the US.

I went to Ghana, excited to try Jollof. Never knew what it was, until I finally had it on my plate. Then I realized...."Oh! This? Red rice? We eat this in Charleston SC all the time." We usually add sausage (or shrimp), onions, peppers, etc, then eat it with fried fish on the side. OMG! So good!

I'm Gullah Geechee and our Red Rice is very similar to Jolloff rice. I made it in Ghana and they screamed "This is basically Jolloff"
