That is completely normal for a first cold start of the day. What you are hearing are the turbos spooling up some because the cold start part of the tune is purposely made rich in order to get the exhaust temps up as quickly as possible so that the catalytic converters heat up enough to start working. To help this, they close the wastegates and Blowoff valves so the turbos make a bit of boost so they can add additional fuel, again to get the exhaust temps up quickly.

If you are talking about the fluttering air noise, it is a leak in the exhaust manifold. Most likely a warped exhaust manifold. Ecoboost been known to have this issue as they run too hot.

Every turbo vehicle I've had does that. It's normal, just cold turbos.

So far my 2011 F-150 3.5 hasn’t made that noise, at 128, 000 I just had a new timing chain, surprise, installed along with a new water pump. Getting new windshield installed next week them I’m going to install a FOR SALE sign, ready to go back to a TJ Wrangler.

Cold engine run high idle to heat cats, high idle equals more exhaust causing your turbo(s) to spool a bit....

Yeah it does, I took this after some folks on FTE told me that this was abnormal. Last week I heard a really strange screeching turbo-ish noise and I think I might have an issue. Hasn't done it since though!

Fords have always had the noisest engines out of the big three

On cold start it will spool up for a few seconds (probably to do some kind of system check)

its normal does that a first start to get turbo heated lubed up. When it idles down to exactly 1000 rpms it will stop and the bov will let out all that pressure and you will hear a pop. Bov is located on the cac on 13 and up models.

Thanks everyone.  I took it to the dealer and they told me it was normal.  Video was posted because some folks on FTE heard the hoot on another video and said that it was abnormal.

My 2.0 Ecoboost does that whistle noise but its very minimal, its normal if you ask me. Its rolling at almost 1500 rpms so the little k03 turbo its spooling. Like the whistle sound tho lol

That's normal for a Ford. You're going to hear all kinds of stuff that sounds like it's broken. When the ecoboost goes into limp mode or it vibrates/shutters, then take it in. Those are the problems that plague the ecoboost, …mainly in cold/humid environments.

Mine makes kind of a barking noise, more noticeable on the drivers side when i speed up to get on the highway. People tell me its just the Turbos, dunno bringing it in monday for oil change (im at 17, 300 km now @ 9 months) and they will check it out. Also when I turn my fans on, it makes a burning electronic smell for the first minute then dissipates. Getting that checked too.

I saw a crown victoria 4.6l 2v modular v8 1 million 2 hundred thousand kilometers, not miles. Do a cold start on a -10c day and start pretty quietly. No engine rebuild other than valve seals according to the guy.

Haven't taken it in yet Biz, I'm waiting to see if it does it again. No sense wasting their time for something that they can't duplicate.

mine does that too when I first start it up or if its a cold day. Think they all do. Does the noise go away after you've been driving for a minute or two?

Mine did the same thing today. Spoiled up then was normal. Have you made any modifications to your truck?
