Single coils can do high gain just fine. I use a normal vintage style telecaster into a EQD Life pedal and Marshall OR20 for Black/Death Metal. If I turned the filter know on the life pedal and messed with my amp EQ I'm sure I could get into doom territory without even adding another gain stage.

I swear getting high gain metal tones has way more to do with amp and pedal choices than the guitar itself.

It's perfect actually even in standard tuning as it forces doom to be written not contrived through generic means. Jingle bells in drop G at a crawling tempo will sound 'doomy' - but surely that misses the entire point.

Pallbearer used a peavey predator strat live and that sounded amazing

The way I see it is that you can play basically anything with any type of electric guitar that has pickups in it, but of course if we’re talking about playing doom with a SSS-strat there are better ways in doing so. There are no rules that say you can’t play this with that, just experiment stuff and have fun, maybe it comes out just fine.✌️

Strats are basically useless for heavier stuff but you can do some wild things with a Tele, especially with the right amp and pedal combo, and if you want to you can just replace the pickups with double-coils for a good price.

Just throw a humbucker or P94 where the bridge pickup is as well as upgrade the pot values to 500k. Then it wouldn’t matter how high or lower the output of your pickups are that pot value would definitely raise some characteristics out of those pickups. If you’re not digging the sound as it turns too shrill and bright, that tone knob and 300k pots have their use and are effective.

Personally, I believe that the Jazzmaster is a better option for a fender style guitar going into doom. I had one and a quick pickup swap from the usual stock single coil JM sized pickup to a absolutely banger P90 pickup in JM size format running into a 70’s Peavey amp that has maxed gain on both channels and combined to one single channel is the way. I also took a type of Rangemaster with extras like boosting mids/bass ranges and the transistor type created a good deal of push and clipped the signal too.

But anything can doom if you’re willing to take it where the outcome desired is most likely. Hell, at one time when all my pedals had been lost, stolen or sold there was no way I could make a fuzz/fuzzstortion to use. But what I had left was a loud and slightly dirty jfet boost and the aforementioned Rangemaster. I took those two with the Rangemaster first on the mids/bass choice and got a good usable fuzz somehow. Then I realized that my amp was absolutely clean and the gain would take it further and better.

I personally use a Tele and Gretsch, both single coils, some of the dirtiest tone i think I've ever gotten, especially from the tele, actually working on my own project tele rn, a dark green with black headstock/neck and pickguard specifically for playing doom

The answer is “fat strat”
Double coil at the bridge
Turn on the middle coil and rear coils and get all kinda sludgy

There are ways to compensate....(HBs help)
I think material (and chops) outweigh particular gear
(I mean, isn't it more WHAT & HOW you play, than purely gear, right?🤔)

I have an all gold Squire Telecaster with humbucker in it I thought wow this sounds nothing like a Telecaster then I took a B string off a 7 string guitar and slapped it in my telecaster... it is now one of my weapons... of doom.

Strat on position 4 (humbucking) into a (optional compressor &) fuzz, into amp w/ bass turned up, at least 1x12" Cab, you WILL be DOOMED.
