Показать описание
In this video I show you how to add a Linux Desktop interface to your Chromebook without wiping anything on your device, This runs inside of Chrome OS so you will not lose any data on the Chrome OS side. Whit this method we will install the KDE Plasma desktop on the Chromebook, this will allow you to get that Linux to feel without deleting any data you already have on your Chromebook. This also supports desktop widgets!

1.Update Linux: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

2. Change Root Password: sudo passwd root

3.Install KDE Plasma Desktop: sudo apt-get install task-kde-desktop

4.Run the desktop: startkde

Fix X11 - cp /etc/x11/xinit/xinitrc ~/ .xinitrc

A big thank you to Chromeunboxed for this, I ran into a couple issues when try this a first because my Linux setup was not updated.
It works great once you have Linux on chrome updated probably.

I went to go try that out a couple weeks ago when I got a chromebook but where this is an education chromebook for students in the classroom that feature is locked out. I work for a university that has an education program and this Dell chromebook is part of a pilot project where they give them to grade 6 students. I have it to help me give tech support for university students for their online classes. I love the chromebook but I'm super bummed I can't try the Linux desktop on it. Great video as always 👍🏻👍🏻😳

NO OFFENCE as this video is really good. Super easy to follow, well presented. I'm presently setting loads of SDR applications etc and I've been using guides like this all over the internet. Point is, these fellas know what they are talking about so it IS a reflection of my lack of knowledge. However it never fails to frustrate when you follow instructions to the letter, apply fixes and as work for me. It probably worked for you but not for me. Therefore, I stand before yet another failed project. It DID download the apps into my linux apps so at least I got something out of it. Despite entering that published SAYS NO. I do have the apps but not the Linux desktop. Very frustrating.

Outstanding Video!!
There are actually several ways to do this, but this is absolutely the best and easiest way!
Thank you so much for your time and effort in creating this wonderful tutorial!

This is great i love linux OS there are a lot to choose from. I just installed twister os its pretty cool and having all those Libre writer apps its not bad for the average person surfing the net and writing stories. School work as well like you said. Great ideas.

I type everything on the list and it all worked until I got to the startkde command. It said command not found. What do I do?

I know it probably wasn't intentional, but going to 11 on the disk size was a nice reference to Spinal Tap just as Google did the same with the Android 11 Easter egg.

what about other desktop environments such as cinnamon?

Congratulations on the work. When possible, test the retro emulators on the Poco X3

My girlfriend has a samsung chromebook 3 with 8gb storage, after wiping everything on the drive that's possible, the max space for linux is like 7.5gb ... Can I use apt-get install to just manually add part of the stuff it installs? It's one of the samsung Chromebook 3 units that seem incapable of removing the security read-only setting for the bios firmware...

That was very interesting. It looks like it should be called the Chrome Subsystem for Linux. :)

I don't have the space to try this but this is pretty cool. I have a dedicated Linux mint desktop so although I'd like to try this it's not necessary

I ran the ChromeOS live session via an USB on a windows laptop and would like to continue doing so. However, I don’t see the Linux(beta) option in the live session. Tried the Crouton method to add Linux in as part of the live session but failed at the last step with the script unmounting Crouton and UID 1000 not found. Any idea??

Does anyone know what to do when startplasma-x11 doesn't work? I was able to open it but when it's opening, it closes, then it would say that they can't locate it, also they ask if there is another
wm running.

How about some emulation testing on chromebooks or linux. Haven't seen that done before.

Can I download from somewhere this old KDE-plasma repo, which still worked with "startkde" command? Around december 2020 they updated the KDE. The issue is not that, because they have new command - startplasma-x11 - but because they put several new staff into the KDE, it not working anymore on Chromebooks. It starting with the new command, but after the logo circling through 1 minutes ending, and lead back to the terminal with several errors. I have Pixelbook 1. POSSIBLE TO DOWNLOAD THE 2020 march KDE-plasma from somewhere???

This actually bricked the Linux on my Lenovo duet chromebook tab. It seemed to get system upgrade okay, but it did not survive kde install.
