The first bassist was Ron McGovney! He also played bass in Leather Charm and Metallica started out in his parents' house, which was slated for demolition. He was replaced by Cliff Burton after about a year and a half.

A couple huge mistakes. Ron McGovney was the first bassists of Metallica. The move from LA to San Francisco(to be more accurate the move took them across the bay to El Cerrito while Cliff Burton lived in Castro Valley/San Leandro not too far)was the one condition Cliff had in regards to joining Metallica.
The other huge mistake, Master of Puppets was released in 1986.
