Careful what you say, and who you talk to. People that are unprepared now will remember you after a disaster. I tell no one

Plan ahead, I have a close friend who I've known for years, who currently lives over an hour away, for the last year, she has been coming to see me a couple times a month, and bringing extra canned goods, and meat to put in my extra chest freezer, because I am her fall back position if shtf. She never lets her gas tank get below a half tank, which is twice what she needs to get here, and has taken multiple different ways to get here, to know different routes, and also keeps a road map in her car, in case gps is down.
On my end, I have her presence here factored into the water needs. I have a family member who will also be coming here who lives 15 minutes away, and will be bringing their preps, other than that, the ark door is shut, security measures in place, and I don't care who you are, there's nothing here for you.
You can't save everyone, so develop a solid plan, and stick to it after shtf.

I recently fell and broke my ankle in 2 places. Unexpected personal SHTF in my situation. Had some preps but was not expecting to be out of work for up to a year. I'm older and had some preps but have lost the Xtra income. Just goes to show that things can happen at any time that are unexpected. So if you are prepared, it makes it much easier to get through such ordeals. Good luck to everyone and thank you for all of your help and ideas.

If you watch the TV show Alone, you can see some good examples of unexpected stuff that wrecked plans: shelter fire, spoiled/raided supplies, food poisoning, and injury. The last one is a BIG one. A twisted ankle, axe/knife accident, or a fall on a wet/icy surface could completely screw someone up. On the TV show you just tap out and get help, but in a real emergency it's not that simple. I would argue that safety rules, a cautious mindset and medical supplies are just as important as something to eat or drink.

My in-laws have the audacity to give condescending comments with my prepping but then say “I know where I am going when there is a collapse in society.”

I primarily prep for hurricanes due to living on the Texas coast. I put together some guidelines for hurricane season prep. and an impending storm prep. I was fortunate enough to get my family, and friends to buy in to being prepared. I have found that most if the hurricane preps flow between other SHTF situations, and it all started with the Sensible Prepper Channel. Thanks y’all!

Its ok to have compassion. But dont forget, feeding strays wont make them go away. People will get to comfortable if you give them an inch they will take a mile.

The ONLY way somebody will know that I be have food during a crisis is if I am bartering, which will be a last resort for me. When people gets hungry, they can get CRAZY. If they know that you have anything, they will spread the word and a mob will come to your house. Everybody, no matter how poor can prep to a point.

Remember where your resupply caches are located. Carry around a fishing pole... come up with a bogus, but believable story if stopped and questioned in route to them. As one commentor pointed out be careful who you talk to and what you say to them. Above all, keep and maintain a low profile always.

Well said Sootch. We live in crazy times and it's gonna get crazier 🇺🇸

#1 Fire! Consider in a long term crisis, Lawns will be uncut & people will turn to makeshift stoves & heating, which will dramatically increase the chance of fire. All it takes is one careless person to set whole towns on fire. Recall the Great Fire of Chicago probably was started because of some careless with a lamp. Probably the number one way to reduce fire risk is to keep grass cut, and brush culled away from any buildings. The #1 Firefighting tool in rural areas is a tractor with a brush hog to keep the vegetation under control.

My husband is negative and angry now with all the craziness going on in the world. I keep trying to encourage him and remind him about how blessed we are to have God on our side. My words are hitting a wall. Any suggestions on how to talk to someone going through such things?

Put up some food for your pets. Dry dog and cat food can be stored in mylar bags with O2 absorbers and then put in a metal garbage cans to keep rodents from getting into it. Luckly i have rescue sparrows. They dont eat a lot. lol

Thanks again for even more info. We need to never give up on our friends and family in getting them started.

The two biggest problems I have are moths and mold. You can find larvae in perfectly sealed and never-opened spice blends, which are very hot. They eat your clothes, your plants (I can pick caterpillars but whenever I come back there are even more and something seems to S-t out a thousand eggs every day, INDOORS). You can smack the moths as much as you like and wage a full-blown chemical war against them, they will just survive. Mold is even tougher. I have it on some walls, it keeps ruining food, and some plants will always suffer from mold if not outright die of it...

What you said about physical work and tools is no joke. Last week, I was using my sharp everyday carry knife to harvest some herbs in my garden. It was in the evening after work; I was tired, clumsy and got sloppy. I now have 5 stitches in my thumb and a flap laceration on my index finger they glued with medical grade super glue. Thank God I had access to decent medical help. While I probably could have managed this situation at home, it would carry higher risk of infection or lasting disability. One needs to work mindfully, methotically and NOT get distracted or sloppy like I did. FWIW.

I don’t think that just offering food to others during SHTF is ever a good idea. Better to expect some kind of “payment” in the form of items or work. Also, I’m thinking that the next time someone says” I know where to go if SHTF happens”, I am going to give them an application where they have to apply to “join us” 😂

Some things that you positively do not want to get wet or dirty should be vacuum sealed. The story of the downstairs flood would just have to take everything outside, wash and dry the vacuum bags, repack and store. That in itself would be a task, but monetary damage would have been almost zero. There should be no food placed directly into a container without some kind of sealed bag at the minimum. Very, very important items other than food can be double vacuum sealed because "sometimes" the bag can leak because of rough handling or packing. Do not forget to slit the edge of the vacuum sealed items so you can open without a knife or scissors especially "emergency" medical items.

Thanks!! This is very helpful to think about this in a sensible manner!

You offer some good, practical advice. The number one issue is your location, location location. A bad location almost guarantees premature death. A good location greatly increases your odds of survival.

An example of a bad location is one that's both densely populated and high crime. Very bad choice.

An example of a good location choice is one that's far away from nuclear targets. Your surroundings should be favorable for survival including having honest, hard-working neighbors, e.g., country doctors, dentists and a Second Amendment Sheriff.
