These are wonderful tips. It is unfortunate my colleague and I are translating Classical Chinese poetry from hundreds of thousands of years ago so we don't have the privilege to talk to the authors. But we would try to find as much information as possible about the poets and their contemporaries' work, as well as a poet other works if we are translating one of his poems. We find comparing different poems of the same poet can offer a lot of new insights that can help with our translation. And your last point is of particular interest to me because that is exactly David and I are trying to do. Thank you for sharing these insights!!😍🤩🤩

Good advices, thank you. I also came across with a version of "smudging" where not the complete meaning was lost, just about 10-50%, but in many sentences, rendering an impactful work rather mediocre.
