Buck 721 Fail

This Buck 721 looks a lot like the new Spitfire but is probably made special for Walmart. It has a lot of issues. I tried a second one but it had similar problems.

Fred, I bought a 119 Special and a model 110, both from Walmart, and had to send the 119 to Buck for a loose "hilt"/finger- guard and the 110 for blade blade play. They fixed the 119 but the 110 still has more play than it should for a lock-back. Both were that way right out of the package.

I've had one of these for a loong time. SLIGHT bladeplay isn't uncommon in the lockbacks I've handled. Usually can be remedied with the ol' T6 torx. Same with retention, tighten up those2 screws that bookend the backlock, check your pivot. 👍

My spitfire has the same retention issue but it corrected itself with some oil and working it. Regardless they aren’t exactly buttery smooth but good work knives. Mine has no blade play

did you have walmart open a second knife if it has the same problem too?

It happens Fred. I have several Bucks (not this one) and they are all outstanding except for a large Buck Lite Max folder that has slight spongy retention. I don't use it much but can send it back if it gets worse. Thanks for pointing this lemon out!

I dont know why people complain about blade play. I just got this knife today. It had a bit of play, but i just tighted it a bit and now its perfect. all it takes is a star bit and 5 seconds and its totally worth it.

You got one made on a Friday before a holiday, 😂 actually I’ve had a few of them, (I ran one over with a lawnmower) it’s the best pocket knife I’ve ever had, ( and I have all kinds of knives) mostly because it is slim and lite and also because of the beefy sturdy blade, it is a workhorse, I use it every day and I mean every day, I work on a farm and I’ve used it for everything. I’ve had other knives of higher quality but they are too heavy and thick for my pocket, this knife is unnoticeable as far as weight and girth, I liked them so much I bought a few for a couple of my friends. I wish the steel was of a higher grade, I find I need to sharpen it quite often but that is a small trade off. At first I was shocked that buck made a knife like this and made it for Walmart of all places but what a little workhorse.

Fred, if you like this knife look into the Buck 722 Spitfire. Its the exact same knife just not WM specific. I have the spitfire in the same finish as the one in this video. There is a little blade play but nothing like that one. Its a great little edc. Worth looking into...I love mine

I tried to fix mine, I polished the internal friction parts and tighten the tension bar the knife lock solid is a fixed blade but both hands are required for open the blade. Try tighten a bit the torx screws and you going to fix it. if you feel like the screws are loose use red or blue threadlocker.

I hard use this knife everyday at work and it is great and when I bought it it had very little blade play and I just tightened the blade up

For something being made in the USA I would have figured there wouldn't have been a problem. Maybe it was a quality control error? Great vid as always though Fred :)

Man Fred, too bad about that bad Buck. That's like getting no Buck at all.

just bought the same knife from wm. It caught my eye as I walked by the display case. I do not have the same issues as yours. Mine feels nice and sturdy and has plenty of retention, unlike yours. Maybe yours was just a dud

I have this Buck slimline 721 as my EDC knife. It is a great knife and I don't have any of the issues you're describing with my particular knife. Overall, this is a great Buck folder for 30 dollars, and is perfect size for an EDC. That being said, my standard full tang fixed blade camping knife is my KABAR USMC fighting knife, or my SOG Creed. I love Buck knives but if the was something wrong with this model I would say so.

I have the same knife, it does have the same up/down blade play caused by the lockback mechanism. The retention on mine was not as bad as yours though, if you try to adjust the frame screw closest to the pivot, loosening it should help the blade snap back in a little better I noticed.
