Gun’s Are CANON In Avatar?!
So we’ve talked about some of the most incredibly overpowered bending and sub-bending abilities in the avatar universe, but did you know that there's actually an incredibly strong real world weapon that also exists within the world of Avatar, it’s the gun.. Yes, Gun’s are canon in the Avatar universe. Let me explain.. You see, in the Avatar legends roleplaying game, we have the Idealist.. A survivor with a heartbreaking backstory.. And they’re overall character design still to this day remains one of the most interesting of all.. Because it’s the only character throughout every form of Avatar lore that can be seen with what they call a hand cannon, which in the past around certain parts of the world was the name associated with a large bamboo cannon that by combining gunpowder and fire, made what we’d one day call a gun.. This historic weapon originated from China, around the time of the Sung dynasty in the year 1259, the weapons would later be spread to Europe by the mongolian empire. And on the current path of Avatar technology, leads me to believe it will appear in the next Avatar’s story.. But what do all you guys think? Will they appear in the future story?.

Firearms did not take off however due to the prevalence of fire bending. Picture this. You arm an entire army with hand cannons and and each of your soldiers have a tiny pouch of black powder on them. Now picture said army fighting against fire benders. The black powder will ignite and your entire army is now dead. This is also why in Korra "laser technology" took off with the spirit cannon. No bender could counter a laser.

i can already imagine the earth benders stopping the bullets mid air and redirected them to the one who fires it

I think itd be interesting if they decided to expand on the unrest between benders and nonbenders like they did in korra season one, and show that despite the suposed conclusion, the fear never really settled down. They could use the idea of real world conflict of self defense, where a mass of nonbenders choose to purchase guns to protect themselves. If they wanted to go even further with the real world issues they could display gun violence and show how truthfully its a bad thing and how people are more likely to die by a bullet than bending. Honestly would be an interesting direction, i felt the amon storyline needed more development in korra, this could be a good way to tie that in.

So in the real world, that weapon is called a fire lance. It was originally made of bamboo and was attached to a spear, but by the time of the Yuan(Mongolian) Dynasty of china it was made of Iron. In Europe it was often used on horseback because of the weapon’s recoil.

I don’t think guns would take off in avatar purely because a metal bender can already make bullet like projectiles and a fire bender can set of ammo
