German here. Our chickens are not bathed in chlorine to make them "sterile" or whatever the reason is for putting harmful chemicals in or on the meat for people to eat later.
OUR chicken is clean and perfectly safe to eat, just as it comes from the farms, and THAT is why we don't want to buy American chicken. We don't want to eat poultry that has more chlorine than the water in our outdoor swimming pools. What you call bread in the US is a terrible crime against all pasta. If you want real, high-quality bread that really deserves to be called "bread", you have to get it from Europe, preferably directly from Germany.
Of course, this doesn't apply to all American or European products.
But for your chicken, your bread and your cars, I can tell you this: it's not that we don't buy them because we're mean or anything. We just don't want them because they're bad. You want to sell chicken in the EU? Make sure the meat is free of chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Want to sell cars in Europe? Make better cars. It's that simple.
Trying to change such fundamental lack in quality with tariffs, is the most stupid idea ever and it will bring the USA nowhere closer to a "fair" trade balance.

My husband paid into Social Security for 45 years he’ll be 65 the end of this year. He told me his 401 is tanking the look on his face says he’s not going to retire.
