HOW TO READ and ANALYZE A RESEARCH STUDY | The Basics | What Makes A Research Study "Good"? In this video we will go over the basics of analyzing a research paper, to see if it’s a “good” source of information. I can’t count how many times I see people encouraging others to find “good data”, but how do we even know what “good research” even is? In this video I’ll give you a few things to look for, and what to watch out for when looking at research studies, and deciding if the findings are going to be something you want to incorporate into your life. We will look at the different types of research studies, what studies you can use for causation vs correlation, how to tell if the study is well done, and research studies need to have to be considered legitimate.

I started this channel because I wanted other working moms, nurses, nurse practitioner students, nursing students, and whoever else to know that you CAN do school, life and work! I’d love to hear your stories of how you combine your personal interests with your family life! You are doing great things, and I hope you remember that!

Finding good research is so hard, and understanding research is even harder. This video aims to help viewers understand research studies. It should be digestible for those with no science background, as well as those who have read their fair share of research articles in their time.

fantastic explanation of academic research in general, i can imagine how helpful this would be for less experienced academics who are learning to research while in a program. your content is by far the most informative and honest that i’ve come across regarding the nursing profession. thank you for sharing your talents!

Impact factor (which you can google) is also a great way to figure out if the journal is reputable!

Just finished Research class. Thought I would hate it. It was boring in the beginning. Methods and Discussion section. That's all I want to know. Gotta love that Abstract! Now I research EVERYTHING! I have become that one. 😳

Thanks Liz! While they teach us this in nursing school, it still takes a while to “sink in” - your video has helped concrete this even more! Love your videos!

Such an irreplaceable skill to have as a medical professional or otherwise! I hope my education teaching includes this in their curriculum.

Thank you for taking the time to make this video! I somehow made it through my whole first semester of nursing school without writing a research paper, but I have a feeling my luck is about to run out in the fall 😂 this will be helpful so I know what to look for!

Thank you for this video! Easy to understand, to the point, yet relatively thorough… I want to start learning about some topics that interest me and this is a great first step towards being able to find some relevant information online! :)

Liz! This has helped so much. I am just finishing up my first 3-week class in my ABSN and it is Evidence-Based Practice, and we have to do a project where we dissect studies. It was SO HELPFUL to have you discuss and explain this!

I am dreading research papers in FNP school, but this video helped make it seem less intimidating, thank you! ❤️ (also, APA hack is to use the references that your professor puts at the end of a power point)

Brilliant timing as always with the on-topic videos. This will be very helpful to give to my boss.

BTW the Sumatriptan is 2/2 on intense sinus headaches/migraines, had another one last night.

GREAT JOB, LIZ!!! Critical appraisal of research hasn’t always been my jam... but during my DNP coursework, I had to MAKE it my jam. While I wanted to vomit during the process of critically appraising articles for my project, in retrospect, it was EXTREMELY helpful, especially in lieu of current events. Hey! Maybe I could do a retrospective study of my own time studying research articles... 🤢🤮 Nah... I’ll pass! 😂 Again, you did an EXCELLENT job with this video! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Good, but peer review isn't necessarily always a measure of validity. It may just be a confirmation of the prevailing bias (eg. saturated fat and cholesterol is bad, fiber is essential)
