Is Diablo 2: Resurrected Worth Playing in 2024?

With Diablo 4 having released just last month, is Blizzard's previous project Diablo 2: Resurrected still worth playing today? The answer to that question is actually a bit complicated, but hopefully I did a good job answering it in this video.

As a longtime Diablo fan, Diablo 3 and 4 felt like they were just playing themselves, almost like an arcade game. Diablo 1 and 2 were all about a dark, gothic atmosphere with a sense of dread and loneliness. RPGs at the time of the first 2 Diablo games were primarily turn-based. So while the gameplay is slow by today's standards, Diablo 1 and 2 were a breath of fresh air with their real-time hack n slash gameplay.

But the tone, atmosphere, and constant sense of danger is what sets Diablo 1 and 2 apart. Diablo 3 and 4, I damn near feel like a superhero! lol I never get that feeling of "oh damn, I'm scared out of my mind!" There's certainly some fun to be had, but it's pretty clear that main Blizzard didn't understand what Condor (Blizzard North) was going for when it came to Diablo. I was really sad when Blizzard North shut down. I thought the Diablo franchise was over at that point. Glad to hear you still enjoy this game though!

JFC! Has it really been 23 years since D2 was released?! Damn I'm getting old.

SO many nights spent playing, doing dungeons in co-op with my roommates. And SO many times late to work in the morning because I was still on the PC well after the sun came up. Hundreds, if not thousands, of hours spent on D2 trying to get that last piece of armor to complete the set...for each character class.

It's pretty simple: D2R is more worth playing than any existing hack&slash, just because it's the only one to have understood everything about loot. And Resurrected is not a Blizzard game at all, it's all Vicarious Visions incredible work. Currently Blizzard is just trash. And saying this as an originally Blizzard fan hurts.

Still playing it and one thing I notice is the player count doesn't actually feel dropping playing it online feels the same everyday like if I make a game to farm cows my room will be full in a matter or secs rune trading feels so alive

Good and balanced review. D2 is still very good, but it's also dated in many ways as well. The problem for modern ARPGs that think they're strictly better though, is that D2 still does certain things much better, which explains its continued longevity. In many ways, ARPGs have evolved towards unending grindfests with the supposed "infinite" endgame that promises infinite replayability, yet the baggage this style of game brings with it often ends up being more counterproductive to replayability than doing what D2 does. D2 has no infinite endgame and makes you play dozens of characters from level 1 instead and, almost by accident, forces the player to challenge himself next time to do it better or faster or impose build restrictions or use weaker skills etc, whereas the concept of self-challenge is almost entirely absent in the infinite endgame and everyone always just wants to "skip the boring campaign already". To each his own though; "better" is always a personal choice.

Dude I love these videos. When I am checking out a game that game out awhile back but never played and it is on sale, I love going to youtube and finding a video of someone playing it recently- after all the patches and updates- to tell me about it lol. Always hope to find these videos for games on sale months or years after release.

D2 is the single most influential ARPG of all time.

The controller support that they created for this game is like something i have never seen in any ARPG or ever expected it in a million years to be this good. I never thought i would be playing Diablo 2 with a controller this game is just amazing in every way. And there is also Project Diablo 2 i think people seriously underestimate how good PD2 looks now with the HD upscaled textures, anti alliasing, shaders to choose from etc

I seriously spent half my life playing D1 and D2 even before the expansion was out. I play D2R now but on and off. It's still addicting for me.

This is a good review. Coming from an original D2 player in my teens when it first came out I loved the game and doing quests with my friends. I still have the CD and original crystal case lol. Idk if I can play it on a console. I’m going to be trying out Diablo 3 and 4 since I haven’t played them yet and I’m definitely going to purchase D2R. Didn’t even know they revived it. Until I saw this video.

Good video and definitely some fair points! D2, D3, and D4 are all quite different games. And each have their player niche. Personally, I've been a Diablo fan for decades and D2 Resurrected, for me, is still the pinnacle, even with some dated mechanics. I do think you would have had a better experience on PC, though.

I bought it on sale and have been really enjoying it. I somehow managed to miss almost all of the Diablo games so far and only played Diablo 4 at a friend's PS4 for a while, and with everything that's going on with Blizzard and Activision i was heavily against giving them 70+ dollars for a disappointing constantly online game with all the samey enemies, it has the depth of a puddle.
D2 Resurrected however has been really great. It actually nails the atmosphere and story beats, with different cool acts, enemies and actually memorable characters.

It really is sad that this is what Blizzard has become. Remaking old stuff and cinematic cutscenes is the only thing they're still good at.

I’m 33 years old I played original back in the day when I was young. So this was a nostalgic purchase and as far as the comment for online play back then I remember there was a lot more people playing Diablo two then I feel now I just bought it yesterday so I don’t know. Maybe I’m still having explored more but I do remember there being a lot of people playing back in the day
