As Rolls-Royce F130 engine testing has been running from March 1, 2023, there is news that the US Air Force (USAF) has assigned a new code to the upgraded B-52. Namely from B-52H to B-52J after installing the Rolls-Royce F130 engine and active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar.

A non-Boeing-designed KC-10 sneaked in at 1:06 without any comment or context.

"Em-kay" for Mk ("mark").

Maybe they'll open the production lines of B-52 to build brand new B-52s.

And I must add to my eloquent contribution a month ago, the upgrades to this magnificent beast mentioned in this Youtube, support suggestion to drop the 'bomber' part of its referenced name as in B52H Bomber to B52J Platform (or something more descriptive).

The B52J needs to lose the bomber designation because it will not be dropping bombs in any current or future conflicts. At best, it will be a platform for a variety of standoff weapons in the current inventory with more to come. The new F130 engines have 17, 000 pounds of thrust, the same as the TF33s they are replacing so its takeoff roll with be the same and its performance in the air will be the same. Why, the wings and airframe were designed and stressed for the TF33 engines. What will change is better fuel economy, longer missions, and lower maintenance costs. I don't believe it is becoming a 'J' because of the engines. Its becoming a 'J' because of the new avionics, radar systems, communication capabilities, plus the satellite uplink for enhanced command and control. And maybe, just maybe, the abandoned gunners seat will have a new crew member to occupy it that will take advantage of some of the new 'stuff'.
