I’ve been welding for about 23 years now and occasionally a new rod will get stuck when I’m trying to strike an arc when using 7018 rods. Don’t get discouraged bro, it’s just part of it.

It helps to position your elbow on the table too. I had my teacher taught me that and to use it like a paint brush

Slide that plate up a bit, plant that left elbow on the table, rest your right wrist/forearm into your left hand. Practically impossible to freehand when you're just starting out.

ez solution= strike at workbench, insuring u have a plate for striking arc, there strike and hold it for few seconds to heat up electrode, then use on job, if still stick clean the job or increase the amps

I was always taught to scratch the bottom of the rod on the table when that happens

Strike the rod like it is a match. Also, move plate so you can lean up against table with one hip. Then being steady helps a lot. He's right to use two hands. Helps to spread feet apart shoulder width or a little wider.

He shouldn’t be welding with such a long stick, he should at least be closer to the middle so he can get a pivot point to be able to hold it steady

My first time welding yesterday for Level 1 Welding, training for X18 and every time i started the process the stick kept getting stuck like what happened to this guy's stick in this video, i had to use two sticks for the same metal for training each time, it was frustrating but interesting i liked it.
