'NO' Evidence For A Universe Before The Big Bang?

The theory of the hot Big Bang revolutionized cosmology by suggesting that the Universe began from a hot, dense state, later confirmed by the discovery of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) in the 1960s. This CMB provided crucial evidence that the Universe expanded and cooled from this hot beginning, forming the structure we observe today.

The Big Bang theory held strong against alternative models, with even notable physicists like Roger Penrose’s Conformal Cyclic Cosmology (CCC) failing to provide a consistent replacement. Notably, inflation theory has extended the Big Bang, proposing a rapid exponential expansion prior to the Big Bang. This concept not only aligns with observed cosmic uniformity but also explains density fluctuations that seeded galaxies and other large-scale structures.

As the early Universe cooled, particles formed in specific stages. Around 380,000 years after the Big Bang, neutral atoms formed, allowing photons to travel freely, creating the CMB's observable glow. Attempts to challenge the Big Bang — like the Steady-State theory — faltered against observational data, especially because the CMB was too perfect a blackbody spectrum to fit any other model.

The Big Bang theory, however, does have limitations. It doesn’t explain why the Universe is so flat or why it reached uniform temperature in causally disconnected regions. Cosmic inflation addresses these puzzles, predicting the even distribution and precise expansion rate observed today. Inflation theory, despite initial skepticism, predicted various phenomena accurately, including the CMB's density and temperature fluctuations, validated over decades of observation.

In the pursuit of explaining cosmic origins, Penrose argued for a universe prior to the Big Bang with signs in the CMB; however, data from projects like COBE, WMAP, and Planck do not support these claims. Penrose's ideas, though theoretically intriguing, have been largely dismissed due to lack of empirical evidence. This saga underscores that even great scientists can hold incorrect ideas when empirical data does not support their theories. Science’s success lies in its commitment to theories that align with observations, regardless of fame or legacy.
