It’s AJR if they had actual musical knowledge

Jacob Collier would be better if he focused his efforts on composition for orchestra or something like that, rather than trying to make pop music.

i actually really enjoyed the more lowkey cuts on this record like Cinnamon Crush, Summer Rain, and Never Gonna Be Alone. when he isn't being obnoxious with his production his talent really shows.

Full video unpacking the divisiveness around this dude would be rad

I somewhat agree with Fantano on this one. Jacob seems like the most positive guy who strives to share his gift and everything but… I just can’t listen to his music. Something about the super clean harmonies and did you hear that chord? Didn’t expect it but it fits! makes it unenjoyable to me.

I don’t doubt that he makes music from the heart but he is such a genius that the art is just too deliberate and… Probably his voice just isn’t for me.

I find myself in an odd middle ground with his music. I think he’s probably an actual music genius, but his music doesn’t personally do it for me. It is a bit too much. Maybe he’s doing what he’s supposed to though. As much as the guy knows, I’m sure it would be insanely boring for him to do a straightforward song and he wouldn’t be being true to himself. He also seems incredibly nice and I find myself rooting for him.

Not gonna lie though, it rubs me the wrong way how people absolutely fawn over and pack arenas for a good chunk of mumble rappers and country artists who do absolutely none of their own production (and in a lot of cases don’t even write their own lyrics) while someone like Jacob who does almost literally everything himself to the highest degree gets shit on by everybody. I’m not bitter or anything though. Lol

damn, I disagree - to me at least I somehow can eb and flow with the music, even when it seems to "jump the shark" because I feel like it balances minimalism and maximalism nicely, never gonna be alone is one of my favorite songs EVER, lush harmonies, great groove, john mayer's guitar solo, as well as she puts sunshine which is such an earworm and I think balances that early 2010s pop aesthetic with some genuinely good melodies - just my thoughts though, its genuinely something I can sit back, turn on, and soak in

I see what you’re saying, it makes his albums not cohesive at all. But there is something about that “let’s do everything vibe” that’s refreshing, it’s a fun album if not a great one.

Back when vol. 3 dropped I was sorta sad Anthony never talked about JC. These days I think it makes sense for him not to and I'm a little disappointed he's started (even though I already gathered I knew more or less what his opinion was). The problem is that Anthony and Jacob have basically polar opposite understandings of what music is for, what creation is about, what gives a piece of art value, etc. Jacob is entirely interested in process, collaboration for its own sake, and of course in Music (in the sense of rhythm/harmony/movement more than in the sense of Art). Music for Jacob is independent of other artistic media because it functions entirely differently. Anthony's more interested in the end product - not in music as a kind of element in which one can live, but in the construction of a complete, cohesive, unique, and perceptive Work with a unified vision. For him music is kind of like literature, or like a lot of visual art - it's as much a way of considering ideas as it is a form of extra-linguistic communication. Those are both important and valid ways of thinking about music, but it's difficult for them to honestly critique each other because they're basically operating from a completely different set of axioms.

Maybe emotional depth isn't what is important to his fans. What I like most about Jacob is his passion for exploring new sounds, genres, chords, and ways of expressing ideas through music. He collaborates not to flex his connections or to brag, but to learn. This album is the product of his curiosity. He has said that the Djesse anthology was for his own learning, so, going forward, I think we can probably expect more cohesive projects from him. I love the album.

okay yes the lyrical content isn’t spectacular but the album is a passion project, and i feel like each track has its own distinct personality and style, showing off the music isn’t objective and to make the music that resonates with you, and for me a lot of the moods and feelings carried by the tracks and a handful of the lyrics have a lot of emotional impact from the arrangement and the intricacies and nuances of the album. it is quirky and weird and has its rough patches ( vocal tone and some over use of vocal effects) but the music flows really well with itself to me and has a lot of connections to other projects and songs from his history. and you shouldnt deny the insanity of BOTW and the orchestration of the little pieces in each song of voices and instruments

I think songs like Little Blue, 100, 000 Voices, and Summer Rain are ripe with emotion! The album was a ride from start to finish, and even if you didn’t enjoy it (which I did), I hope you could at least say it was entertaining!

Huhh. I really liked this album. There are definitely some lowlights but I think the emotional depth really shines in songs like Little Blue and Never Gonna Be Alone. But I do hear what you're saying; there are definitely some emotionally empty spots

Gotta say that Tori’s verse with the backup vocals on Troubled Waters was fire tho

My thing about Jacob’s music is that I think the common criticisms - wacky mixes, bland songwriting, lack of emotional depth - are all completely warranted. But I still like it anyway lol and I find myself rooting for him

I can tell you he definitely loves and understands music more than 99.9% of the world, but he doesn’t understand why and what everyone else loves and understands about music, and that’s ok. At the end of the day he’s just making what he wants to make.
