It was some far-off Saturday ago when, after spending the majority of the day feeling under the weather, I decided to take a chance and download a game I had in my library but never started. Not only did I start it that night, I finished it; I mean, I just couldn't put it down. A Story About My Uncle is not a long game, so that helped, but it just has some essence that was so alluring to me then and is so charming now, having played it a few times since my initial playthrough. This game captures a feeling of a truly otherworldly adventure so well, with each new chapter spanning a new section of this strange planet you find yourself on. With societies built upon giant stalagmites and floating islands, giant creatures that lurk in the dark, and some real wacky technology, the world you find yourself in is truly alien.

But what's key about the setting is that it may just be, as the title indicates, a story. The framing device is that you aren't actually doing these things, at least not in the moment; you're telling a bedtime story to your daughter. While the narrator may be describing it as something real that happened to him, there are a few hints to the contrary, aside from the fantasy element of the story. All the characters you meet, the places you visit, and even catching up with your uncle may just be figments of this story; how you wish things may have turned out for your uncle. I don't believe the story ever really confirms one interpretation or the other, and while this decision can make me a little miffed in other stories, here, I think it works perfectly. Whether or not the story is real, the emotion of the story definitely is, and fake or not, that makes the narrative powerful.

And hey, the music is pretty good too!

The soundtrack was composed by Santiago Ferrero.
A Story About My Uncle was made by the team at Coffee Stain North (Formerly Gone North Games) and published by Coffee Stain Studios.
