It's WAY creepier than you think, the free swimming barnacle larva attaches itself to the crab and then pierces the crab's shell and molts, injecting itself into the crab's body while leaving it's old shell behind on the outside. It never forms a new shell instead it's tissues invade the crabs interior like a cancer becoming filaments of barnacle tissue that spread through the crab's body and a set of barnacle ovaries. As the tissue no longer needs organs to survive it doesn't have any, it's now just alien tissue living inside the crab's body and a set of gonads with no organs or nervous system of it's own that produce hormones which rewire the crab.
