The Unique Selling Proposition, also known as USP, or Unique Selling Point is a description of the qualities that are unique to a particular product or service and that differentiate it from any competing product in the same market.
In tourism marketing the USP is critical because the visitor often has no knowledge of any vendor in the market. He may well choose a hotel based on the biggest pool, or a restaurant because it has the largest buffet bar. He has no knowledge of the food quality.
It may be difficult for the owner of a small tourism based business to discover exactly what his unique selling proposition is. In this case, we recommend sitting down with trusted employees and taking a serious hour to discuss the issue. If a USP is still not found perhaps its time to create a new policy that will result in one.
This video gives a number of examples of the Unique Selling Proposition and makes the point that they are often not big things. It may well be that your proposition is easy access to the Boardwalk. When its crowded and traffic is bad the ability to walk to dinner may be a really big deal.
