I just got this guitar passed down to me, and it felt so silly trying to get the strings to make any noise other than what they start with.

I knew that the frets did SOMETHING, but what? Now I know.

Thanks. If there are multiple ways to get the same note, then how to know which is the "right" one? How do those chord pattern inventors find that a specific pattern is better if you can make the same notes using different patterns?
