Показать описание
US President Joe Biden thanked Prime Minister Fumio Kishida for Japan’s support of Ukraine and its people during a meeting in Tokyo. A Quad leaders meeting is set for Tuesday with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australia’s new PM Anthony Albanese.
“Japan is also a key global leader working with our G-7 partners to hold Putin accountable for his war in Ukraine," said Biden.
Biden will launch a long-awaited economic initiative for increasing US involvement in Asia during his trip to the region, according to one of the cabinet officials leading the initiative.
Before Biden touched down in South Korea on Friday, many officials in the region have struggled to understand the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework -- the main policy initiative he plans to unveil on the five-day trip. The US ambassador to Japan, Rahm Emanuel, said that some governments were asking “What is it we’re signing up to?”
The Commerce Department is leading negotiation of pillars of the framework focused on supply-chain resilience; clean energy, decarbonization and infrastructure; and taxation and anti-corruption. The US Trade Representative’s office is leading the work on fair and resilient trade. The administration also has been working to include digital issues like data localization and cross-border data flows.
