Basically the police have to do double the work: investigate the stolen car, then hope to get a lead on the killers. One way to start solving the problem: send car thiefs to prison.

The criminals remove their license plates before committing a crime. And, cover their faces.

I don’t mind increased surveillance ops like cameras and plate readers in public spaces. I do mind criminals not being charged or held accountable for their crimes and the funding is for naught.

Dumbest idea.. those criminals used stolen car… or fake plate. Just don’t let animals out when arrest.
Otherwise will NEVER solves the problems.

Really? Most of these criminals steal cars first then commit these crimes.SMH

But first, they need to enforce front and back plates, including Teslas, and sinc the DMV database for stolen plates.

Great, only legal abiding people will get traffic infractions and fix it tickets when the bad guys will use stolen license plates to commit crimes. Hey, how has all those cameras worked in Oakland? Jeesshhh...

Readers would be useless against stolen and blacked out cover plates.

Cause criminals totally use cars that can be directly traced to them...

Why do I feel about these license plate readers that they're more about giving tax paying citizens traffic tickets then they are about keeping us safe

They do realize that the people committing these crimes are using stolen vehicles or have the plates covered.

The best way for SF leaders to tackle their crime epidemic is to resign for de-funding the police back in 2021

Stolen Cars or Cars without Plates can still be tracked with a Network of Surveillance Cameras. Many identifying markers can distinguish what type of vehicle to be suspicious about such as Rims, Stickers, Tint, Dents.

Bad people drive stolen cars ... Strong law enforcement and court system are the answers.

According to a California FAQ on automated license plate, readers, one of the common applications of these systems is to look up the plate number on a “hot list” and alert law enforcement that a plate of interest has been detected. Those hot lists would include stolen vehicles and stolen plates. So IF that is what SF plans to do here, then actually I’m on board. But if this is just a multi-million dollar way to come up with a new way to say “there’s nothing we can do”, which SF law enforcement seems to have embraced on several highly publicized occasions, not okay. So SF, put them in. SFPD, respond to the alerts. DA, fcking prosecute these guys and message to these dirtbags that SF does not tolerate robbery, theft, murder and other antisocial behavior.

Criminals steal cars to use when committing their crimes. That's why there are so many stolen cars and hijackings taking place these days.

Will there be real time reporting of license plate data? It does no good to know a stolen car WAS there. If you know it's there NOW, go get it!

It's one thing to install them, it's another to take the time, sort through the data and then act on the data.
