Fun fact: In the original Beast Wars series, the Maximals and Predacons are actually roughly human sized. This is because after the war between the Autobots and the Decepticons, Cybertron had very little energon left over (relative to before the war). Over the years, they adapted smaller bodies that consume far less energon in order to preserve as much as possible. This also explains why they took up organic alternate modes, as they provide a shell to protect them from the large amounts of energon radiation emitted from the vast quantities of raw energon on prehistoric Earth.

There is one drawback to the Maximals, they only get the full extent of their weaponry when in robot mode, but they can only be in robot mode for a short period of time untill they have to revert back to beast mode to protect them from the energon on the planet itself.

Beast wars was my childhood. I believe there was some line in them that they had to mimic animals bone and muscle structures to resist the amount of energon waves being put out.
My favourite part of the movie that doesn't have a lot of reactions to it is when they shout Maximals Maximize.

Actually, the maximals originally developed the ability to turn into animals in order to blend in on their colony planet. Or if this is the G1 timeline, to protect from energon overloading as well as overall disguise as to not startle the wildlife.
