Lord of the Rings: Gandalf: 'What to do with the time that is given to us'

Many times we wish our lives had been different and that we didn't have to face such difficult situations. We can't control all that happens to us or the outcome of all of our actions, but what we can do is decide what to do about the situation that we now are.
There is a great prayer that I use now and then to keep focused: "Strength to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change those that I can and wisdow to know the difference."

I think the only difference in this and the book is that he initially says something like "So do I, but that is not for US to decide..." meaning more that he himself is not certain that things will turn out well, but he believes that they were meant to be in this place, at this time, by powers other than evil. And that is a comforting thought.

Came here after hearing about Russia’s declaration of War, the Corruption of the Canadian Government, and the uncertain future that is ahead.

I know this isn’t encouraging by any means but this is the time where strong men must rise up and restore order. It’s the cycle of all things when things get difficult. I pray that we’ll never see such conflict at home but I also understand nature itself must require these things to flourish and to remind ourselves constantly.

years after a hard and chaotic time of trying to live my own in my late teens, intentionally launching myself away from under a fairly sheltered and protected life, and being altogether too lucky in support to grow forward from the resulting crashing and burning -- Gandalf's, "...and so do all..." might as well be, "and so do all people who grew up without worry but who suddenly end up with some first cruel taste of how hard things really are for most of the people of the world..." cathartic.
