How to Pull a Blood Feather

preview_player
Показать описание
► Blood feathers are new feathers that grow in to replace older feathers. When a bird starts to molt, it is normal for these feathers to start growing in faster. However, in active birds, they can become broken. Since these feathers still have veins, it is important that these feathers get pulled quickly ✔

► Tips
+ Like any animal relationship, your bond with your bird will help make this process easier. After the ordeal, be sure to praise the bird and give it a treat ✔

► Warnings
+ This is a fairly simple procedure. However, if you are at all uncomfortable with it, seek a professional veterinarian that deals with birds. Your hesitancy will scare the bird and may do more damage.
+ If the wound does not clot, your bird will bleed to death. Seek a veterinarian if your bird does not stop bleeding.
+ Do not trim flight feathers until new feathers have grown in. This means that the bird may be able to fly, so take precautions when handling your bird ✔

Removing an actively bleeding blood feather can be the difference bw life and death in certain avian emergencies. Birds can only tolerate losing about 10% of their total blood volume, so there is typically just not enough time to get to an ER vet, it is often necessary to take matters into your own hands! I will correct the video and say to lightly hold your bird in a towel, too much pressure can suffocate a bird as they have air sacs which need to expand in order to breathe. Second, you must carefully pull out the wing and firmly secure it at the elbow and wrist to avoid injury if the bird moves. Third, pulling a feather is much like plucking hair or epilation, yes it might hurt for a second, but it doesn't last for more than a few seconds!! You will not break any bones by plucking a feather unless you are incorrectly holding the wing and put abnormal torque on the arm and break the arm via inappropriate handling. Lastly, it is not necessary to give a bird any pain medication prior to pulling the feather out...the time it would take for the pain medication to provide any kind of relief would be too long and in that time, the bird could bleed out and collapse, and as already mentioned, liking plucking hair, it hurts for a second and then the pain is gone!! I read that these feathers can be embedded in bone, and you can break the wingbone if you do it incorrectly. Consult with a professional on this.

When you pull the feather out support the wing and the joint. Pinch the wing between your finger and thumb to support it and keep it still. Do not pull the wing out of far or backwards.

The very first thing to do is, get the bird calm, this slows down the heart rate an reduces blood loss..I no longer remove bleeding feathers, my avian vet told me not to do it ever again!! Since that time, I have had major bleed on my cockatiel breaking a new primary feather..Lots of blood does come from these feathers an is very scary to see, this is what I do...Get your bird calm as possible, if you can't see where the feather as broke, drip some water to the area, this will help to get a better look cos the feathers around will be wet...I then apply quick stop but make sure you apply it wet, not dry..If you can't see where it is coming from, pack the area to stop the bleed cos that's the most important thing...I then give them pain relief, this is prescribed by a avian vet an I always have it in my birds first aid kit, no pain equals no pick!..I line the cage with white kitchen roll, this helps me to see any blood that may drip, if it does, I look again, if not, I know it has stopped..Sometimes I add a little honey to the water, if the bird is shocked slightly...I then sit up all night worried sick, even though I know they are ok..A few days later, i give them a warm bath to remove the quick stop..Should feathers keep being pulled, the follical can become damaged, this can stop future growth, for good..It's very risky pulling a feather, painful too as it has to be done with force, I haven't pulled a feather for years now an thankfully this has always worked well but it's up to you to decide what you think is best..

I think the title is misleading. Read the description and search it up online.

What the heck!? No one listen to him or her. It is best to ask a vet to do so. You should try to avoid pulling blood feathers. If you pull quickly or pull the feather at all, the feather could be attached to the bone, and could cause bone damage. To the person who made this video, no offense, but next time, just consult a vet

that can cause broken bones. also they can bleed to death from doing that. Lastly the bird may go into shock because you are pulling its feathers.

so i just saw a video where they say to never pull one out. you could cause broken bones. you should apply the corn or soap to the broken part to stop the bleeding, but leave the feather in.

There has to be a way to give the bird some pain relief before you do this!
