Why Glucose Spikes Damage the Body | Dr. Casey Means

Levels Co-Founder Casey Means, MD, explains.

⚠️ 4 downstream effects of a glucose spike:

- glycation: when sugar sticks to our cells and tissues
- oxidative stress: the generation of free radicals in the body
- inflammation: the body reacting to something being “off”
- reactive hypoglycemia: a blood sugar low following a spike

🫠 Reactive hypoglycemia can be associated with anxiety, mood lability, fatigue, brain fog, and cravings. It’s the effect (of the above four) you’ll feel more immediately rather than in the long term.

✅ You can avoid these effects by keeping your glucose levels stable, like gently rolling hills rather than spikes and dips, which helps avoid insulin surges.

Casey I discovered I am prediabetic and insulin resistant by wearing the cgm and using the levels app.
What a shock!

Wearing a CGM I identified reactive hypoglycemia episodes. Scary stuff. It explains a lot. I know the feeling now. This impacts academic performance and relationships.

I have been diagnosed with Hypoglycemia. What is the difference between that and Reactive Hypoglycemia?
Also how do I figure out how to get back to this video (cause I can’t “Save” it) to see the answer to a question?
For now, I’m just going to share it to my feed then play it again in two days to see if there’s a reply. ??

My energy balance is 3000ish calories a day. How do I eat that much without spikes. I’ve worn a monitor and I just don’t know how to do it. If I don’t snack (which we have been told is best), then those meals are massive.

Of course being healthy and responsible is very important - does this info on blood sugar and glucose spikes mean I should never have ice cream? I don’t have it often (3-4x a year) but just as an example - what about pie on Thanksgiving?

Nah, this doesn’t happen. When you eat different foods together(which if you eat a well balanced meal you do)…the glycemic response goes way down. It’s almost a complex carb.
