In my art classes it's just like:

Copy this, copy that. Want to be creative? Well screw you, art is only about copying stuff! No digital stuff either!

For me art is a way to stop my head exploding from all the stored ideas I have... BUT NO! If it doesn't exist In real life, ya can't draw it! So that new species you've been wanting to draw? Well, you CAN'T!

In college I also wondered why in the first year we were told to experiment with different medias of art, so I asked. My teachers answer was, "to keep your mind open to the various forms of art in the world and not to constrict yourself to one form." Truthfully I agree with her, I appreciate her getting me to go outside my comfort zone of just painting because now I can use various forms of art not to mention lino-printing which I despised in secondary school.

the exact same thing happened to me
my teacher had oversaw my final piece, watched me work at it for literally wEEKS, and then a couple days before it had to be handed in told me that it didnt "show my potential" and i had to start from scratch doing something i hated that she wanted me to do

I had an art teacher in Foundation of Art thing and she kept trying to convince me to do a thing in the sky and i was like ??? No its my artwork i want it THIS way and she was like "mmm oookayyy" and took off like 5 points off the Creativity portion of the rubric and Bish what

I never liked art class in elementary, the teacher HATED her job, she made it clear in her emails to my mom(when she would tell her things that she did unprofessionally). My teacher would just threaten to send people to the office and would just let them yell and interrupt. I also knew how to do everything so I really didnt need to learn it again. And I just think my teacher hated me, I asked about doing our own style but then she answered with, "Well I let you do it all year, so you have to do realistic now." I ended up crying like the sensitive child that I was.(we actually did realistically the entire year)

I never understood how a teacher could restrict a person's creativity, just to fit the syllabus, then proceed to judge how a person worked with the small box that a person could not think outside of due to the grading, and "requirements" for a creative piece

This was about the exact same experience I had in High School, if not a bit worse.

The courses are a bit different here in the US (I guess depending on the school/district?) I took a Digital Art class in High School to better refine my work and learn some new techniques since I've been doing digital art since Middle School. I had an absolutely horrid teacher - not only did she force us to experiment with stuff that didn't even help my art (Typography in Digital Art?), but if it wasn't to her standards, she'd absolutely tear and berate you for your "lazy" work.

Luckily I shrugged that experience off and used it to better myself instead of having it tank my motivation, so that'll always be a victory for me. College and Art courses have treated me really amazingly so far, so that's a bonus.

My art teacher focused more on the process rather than inspiration pieces. I brought in a sketch I did for a project and resistor to make it easier when doing the digital; my teacher liked the sketch enough to hang it up on the wall behind his desk. I still send him my drawings from time to time.

Relate to this tbh on the comfort zone thing - I never knew I'd be into acting till I was pushed to do it, but it's really helped me develop a stronger voice for the characters I write in a way?
