HOW LONG does the OXYGEN in your MASK last??? #shorts

Did you know that the passenger oxygen mask above your head will only supply you with chemically generated oxygen for approximately 14 minutes? In case of a rapid depressurization, the oxygen masks will automatically fall from the panel above your head. Once you pulled on the cord, you activated the flow of oxygen. For approximately 14 minutes, you'll have a constant flow of oxygen, which is approximately the time it will take pilots to have descended to a safe altitude you can normally breathe again.

I hope you enjoyed this video and learned a little aviation fact for today! More to come tomorrow!
Wishing you all the best!
Joe

If it takes less than 14 minutes to descend to a safe altitude you won't have to worry about the oxygen running out for too long.

If a pilot cant descend to a safe altitude in 14 minutes, the masks are the least of your worries

I'm aware of an exception to this: Airliner flights that fly over high mountains like the Andes will not have traditional chemical oxygen masks.
This is because for these flights, there is no option to descend to a safe altitude due to the mountains, The pilot might be able to reduce altitude to a level where a human doesn't need a pressure suit (but does need oxygen), but the aircraft will have terrain blocking the further descent to a level where a human can breathe sufficient oxygen to maintain aware and alert unassisted.
On such aircraft that fly these routes, instead of having the aircraft equipped with chemical oxygen generators, they will carry large high pressure tanks of oxygen gas that will be distributed to the masks thru a network of pipes, the closest thing I can think of to a system like this is the oxygen distribution system in a hospital, where each hospital room that has beds will have piping that allows oxygen to be supplied to the patient if needed.

In some places like Peru, regulation say's that oxigen has to be 22 min

Hey Joe 😊 . That time heavily depends on the aircraft. For example in 787(bird I fly). The PSU oxygen will last for 60 minutes and it is not generated it comes from oxygen tanks that are in the PSU units - Moreover, you DO NOT pull on those, you take a breath and it will activate 😊 . Love your vids, have a nice flights 😉

Most widebody aircrafts now has 22 mins chem oxy generators.. it allows aircraft to fly most part of the world that has high terrains..

If you fly with ryanair or spirit you will have to pay for this extra in-flight option

How ever, pilots oxygen mask run for much longer time than the passengers ones, bcuz the las person you want to be unconscious in a flight are the pilots

If "Chemically generated oxigen" is something that scares you, i have something to tell you about all of food (plants generate it chemically)

So what you're saying, is sit in a row with 3 seats.

Elbow the other 2 passengers next to you. Take their oxygen, and you can breathe for 42 minutes?

There are two types of system used when it comes to passenger oxygen systems: Chemically-generated Oxygen (which is what Joe described), and another type that is Gaseous type (stored in large physical tanks), which lasts longer and obviously are heavier to carry. The latter are used for long-haul intercontinental flights where flights over high terrain will be encountered, like over the Himalayas. These type of oxygen system last much longer, for instance if the aircraft levels off at MSA of FL180 (only for a limited time before subsequently descending to 10, 000 once cleared of the terrain), the oxygen supply can last for around 35minutes if 300 passengers, or around 60minutes if more than 500 passengers (like on the A380), provided the minimum oxygen pressure requirements are complied with during dispatch. That is why sometimes Boeing variants are called “ER” for extended range, they have large passenger oxygen tanks installed somewhere in the cargo hold vicinity, distribute to each passenger seat via an oxygen distribution network. These type of system allows for pressure regulation (according to what level the aircraft is flying) and even shutting off, when no longer required. The chemical-generated oxygen system cannot be regulated or shut off. Once activated they’ll just provide oxygen until depletion, which is around 15 minutes, minimum.

Did you know that the oxygen mask will only work if it is being maintained. Each mask has a canister with a expiration date.

chemically generated oxygen is the same oxygen as "not chemically generated" oxygen, and plus all oxygen is generated by chemical reactions.

Took this guy about 14 minutes to get through that sentence

OT, I know, but...
A few years ago I booked a flight on an historic Dakota. Wonderful.
Relating this experience later, to a friend in a restaurant, I noticed the elderly lady at the next table was listening intently. She apologised for eavesdropping. No problem - fine with me. In fact, as she seemed to be alone, why not join us?
I finished my story, and asked her if she knew what a Dakota/C47 was? The answer was wonderful.

"Young man!"
(I was 65 at the time)
"When you've been in an otherwise empty aircraft, struggling to get over the Andes, with an oxygen bottle on the next seat and a diplomatic bag in your lap, you're hardly likely to forget what a DC3 is!"
I just had to kiss that lady on both cheeks!

They also give you pure oxygen so you become euphoric and calm before you crash.

Also those things run really hot so do not touch the cylinder once activated. The heat of these things have brought down a plane (normally installed ones won't do that), but only because they were improperly stored in the cargo hull (without safety caps and marked empty in overcrowded cardboard boxes) together with other flammable stuff like tires and packing material.
