I NEVER see people argue against the watchmaker using this logic. People ASSUME that they know what creation technique is, or even what the object is at the start. But....wait wait wait. Back-Up, what if a person has never seen a watch? Or a house? Or whatever other version people use....

Putting yourself in that scenario doesn't lead straight to: AH Yes! Watch, and therefore...Cartier designed it. No it usually instead puts us right into 'God of the Gaps' territory (hence why I called it a fallacy not a supposition). Which brings us tooo...Cargo Cults. (*yes yes, i understand the problematic issue of colonization mindsets, but for the sake of this discussion lets back burner that for now).

"Prosperity ""Christianity"" " (as espoused by American megachurches) is one example of a "cargo cult."

Theres a really old movie called "The Gods must be Crazy" it was about a tribesmen in africa that was getting rid of a glass coke bottle that fell out of a plane into his village. They think its from the gods and it caused trouble between villagers where there wasnt any before. So he went to take it and throw it off the earth. Its funny. ❤

This is actually a very good point that I never thought about. I havent seen this argument (the watchmaker), I usually hear the "Tornado blows through a junkyard, " one. But it makes sense that if you have no concept of what something is, or how it was even made, and you see it for the first time anywhere and someone cant explain to you what it is or who made it, you just assume it came from nothing, or that a god made it.

I was a Christian for 25 years so I've been on both sides of the argument. I love this channel so much! Thank you for restoring my post-christian sanity.

The watchmakers analogy defeats itself with it's very nature. The argument is basically that it's self evident that the world is created. But if its so self evident why isn't it the rock maker analogy?

I have always truly hated this argument too! 😆

I don't care what you say. Johnfrom left me this magic ticking rock and he will be back to show me what it does.

There's this book called Comanche Bondage (not as sexy as the title suggests, unfortunately) where this guy wielded a pocket watch in order to get these Comanche guys not to kill him because they'd literally never seen one before. After the initial shock wore off they kicked his ass but they 100% thought it was magical.

I dislike the watchmaker argument because what the argument effectively concludes is that the watch is also equal to the sand on the beach, the water in the ocean, the oxygen in the air since it's all designed by a creator.

If a watch is sitting on a beach of watches, next to an ocean of watches, surrounded by an atmosphere of watches, any singular watch in that scenario is mundane and you'd be hard pressed to conclude a creator.

Not to mention that there’s theories of giants and stuff because of natural formations that look like stairs and stuff

There's a movie called The God's Must be Crazy where a tribe finds a glass soda bottle and think it's a gift from the gods.

When something just appears, before science gave us answers, it was easy to make such assumptions.

This is a great argument, but I had to watch it twice to understand because the first time I was just staring at how good your makeup looked and absorbed zero info😂

Have you ever seen the movie "the gods must be crazy"? 👀
Edit: if anyone wants to see the movie but hasn't, don't look at the replies. Someone posted a spoiler lol

This argument always uses human made objects. We know every painting has a painter. Every car has a manufacturer. Every building came from the mind of a person. This is an argument for the excellence of human ingenuity not a creator. We know how paintings are made. We know how cars and buildings get made. AND we know how the universe got made. The big bang, the formation and destruction of stars, accretion of matter, chemical interactions then evolution by natural selection.

I firmly believe, and this will be an unpopular opinion, god is not omnipotent. Though omniscient, all power seems unlikely. The first example, "The Day of Rest" is an unnecessary act for some being that is supposed be all powerful. The second example, "The Great Flood" has it's scars around the world from the ripples in the African deserts to the possible* location of the Noah's Ark in a mountain range. Example three and possibly a controversial one, "The Dinosaurs Extinction" is not farfetched with out other context. The fourth and most likely controversial, "The Evolution of Humans". With the understanding two things can be true at the same time evolution has been proven, with the discovery of previous -sapian bones as well as a study into the short term memory of what is to be our evolutionary ancestors. Something pushed evolution into motion. Humans are just another experiment, who knows if we would even look like what is believed to be God. Thanks for indulging an over active mind.

An even more basic idea of this is showing an iphone to your great-grandparents. They might not even know what a computer is so I’m sure they would think there is something strange going on with that little box.
